GLENROCK – The 3A East regional tournament in Glenrock culminated in a 2-1 record for the Torrington High School girls’ basketball team, propelling the Lady Cyclones to second place.

Torrington opened regionals with an overwhelming quarterfinal victory against Glenrock, 56-30.

The Lady Blazers progressed to the semifinals to square off against Buffalo. The game tied, 36-36, with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. A decisive 6-1 run by Torrington as the clock approached the final buzzer, anchored by solid free-throw shooting from seniors Jaycee Hurley and Teryn Stokes, sealed the semifinal win for the Lady Blazers, 42-37.

The game for the regional title pitted Torrington against No. 1-ranked Douglas with the Lady Blazers coming up short, 61-27.

“The Lady Blazers had an excellent weekend at regionals and finished right where we wanted with a top 2 seed heading into state,” coach Chris Strampe said. “Typical to our season, each game featured a different group of girls stepping up to lead us on the court.”

Torrington commences the 3A state tournament with a game against the No. 3 seed from the west, Lander, on Thursday at 9 a.m.

“We will be ready to come out and win our first-round game versus Lander on Thursday morning,” coach Stampe added.

Glenrock

The Lady Blazers opened with a 5-0 run, including a close-range shot by Hurley and three of four free throws from Stokes.

Glenrock responded with five points to tie the game before senior Olive Osmera drained a 3-pointer to place Torrington ahead, 8-5, at the end of the first quarter.

An explosive Lady Blazer offense netted 17 points in the second quarter while a solid Torrington defense held Glenrock to four.

Hurley paced the Lady Blazer offense in the second with nine points, while senior Madix McIntosh, Stokes, Osmera and junior Kennedy Reinhardt each tossed in a bucket.

Torrington led, 25-9, at halftime.

A 16-3 run by the Lady Blazers in the third quarter clinched the win for Torrington.

Hurley opened the third going 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Reinhardt picked up a steal and Long scored a jumper.

Reinhardt grabbed another steal, setting McIntosh up to score from inside the perimeter. Hurley converted an and-1 and Long scored on a fastbreak. Long followed up with a close-range shot.

Hurley wrangled a steal and Reinhardt rounded out third scoring with a deep outside shot.

The Lady Wranglers topped off their win with 15 points in the fourth quarter. Torrington’s reserve players entered the game with buckets by freshman Grace Hibben, sophomore Zaela Rios and sophomore Aftyn Hager and steals by sophomore Kadence Schamel and freshman Ellis Mortimore.

Hurley led Torrington in scoring against Glenrock with 16 points. Long also tallied double digits with 10 points. Osmera collected eight points, Stokes seven, Reinhardt five and McIntosh four.

“We had a tough draw in playing the home team right off the bat, but our defensive pressure was too much for them and we pulled out a comfortable win,” Strampe said. “Jaycee Hurley took charge in this game, finishing with 16 points and five assists.”

Buffalo

The Lady Blazers hit the ground running in the first quarter against Buffalo, tripling the Lady Bison in scoring, 15-5. Long anchored the Torrington offense with six points while Reinhardt and McIntosh both swished a trey.

Buffalo topped Torrington in scoring in a physical second quarter, 9-7, although the Lady Blazers remained ahead by eight points at halftime, 22-14.

Osmera lined up for a 3-pointer in the second while Long and Stokes each netted a bucket. Defensively, Stokes and Reinhardt both picked up steals.

Buffalo reduced Torrington’s lead to four points, 34-30, in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Blazers, 16-12.

The final eight minutes of regulation opened with Torrington forcing turnovers with steals from Osmera and Hurley. Osmera tossed in a jumper, widening Torrington’s lead to six points, 36-30.

Buffalo answered back with six points to tie the game, 36-36, at 1:37.

Stokes replied with a close-range shot and the lead swung back to the Lady Blazers, 38-36.

Hurley pulled down a defensive rebound and Buffalo fouled on its subsequent possession.

Hurley and Stokes both went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line to punch in the semifinal victory.

Long paced the Lady Blazer offense in scoring against Buffalo with 13 points while Osmera netted 11 points and Stokes 10. Hurley contributed four points with three apiece by Reinhardt and McIntosh.

“We knew Buffalo would give us a better game in the semifinals and luckily we were the more composed team down the home stretch,” Strampe said. “Teryn Stokes came through with maybe the best defensive charge I’ve ever seen at the end of the game. Jaycee and Teryn also stepped up and hit big free throws to seal the game and put us in the championship.”

Douglas

The first quarter between Torrington and Douglas ended with the Lady Bearcats ahead, 18-10.

The Lady Blazers battled back in the second quarter to outscore Douglas, 12-9, and narrow the Lady Bearcats’ lead to two possessions, 27-22, at halftime with a pair of free throws by Stokes.

Douglas pulled ahead with a 20-2 run in the third quarter to clinch the win.

Stokes paced the Lady Blazer offense against Douglas with 10 points with McIntosh contributing eight. Stokes pulled down five rebounds.

“I was proud of our effort coming out strong against Douglas, sending us into halftime with a five-point game,” Strampe said. “Unfortunately, we ran out of gas and couldn’t keep up the same level of intensity in the second half. Despite the loss, the weekend as a whole went according to our plan and kept us on track for all our goals this season.”
