TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers soccer team hosted Rawlins for its home opener at the Old Wiseman Field on Friday, April 11.
While both the Torrington offense and defense mustered strong plays throughout the game, Rawlins ultimately won the matchup, 6-0.
“The Rawlins game did not go the way we planned,” coach Tyler Cram said. “They out ran us and worked harder for longer than we did. There are areas that we have been improving on, such as passes and aggression, but we still have more to work on.”
A solid Torrington defense held the Rawlins Outlaws to a single goal in the first half. Junior goalie Avary Rising scooped up seven saves. Sophomore Kynzi Thomas and junior Natalie Long cleared the backfield with powerful kicks. Defensive hustle by senior Rachel Gomes and junior Natalie Lira also prevented Rawlins from scoring on several occasions.
The Lady Blazers offense attacked the Lady Outlaws’ side of the field, resulting in a shot on goal by senior Marisol Munoz in the first half.
Rawlins scored on a penalty kick late in the first half to pull up, 2-0, at halftime.
In the second half, junior Kirstin Prado collected eight saves as goalie.
While the scoreboard in the second half favored Rawlins, 4-0, the Lady Blazers offense spent more time in Lady Outlaws territory, culminating in two shots on goal by Munoz and one from junior Hallie Fuller.
