Lady Blazers battle Worland

TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers soccer team continued to demonstrate growth as the played the Worland Lady Warriors in a road game that came down to the wire on Saturday, April 5.

Worland scored a single goal in the first half and again early in the second before the Lady Blazers defense closed ranks. While the Torrington offense made numerous strikes into Worland territory, the Lady Blazers ultimately came up short in scoring a goal and the Lady Warriors posted the conference win, 2-0.

“I feel the girls did a really good job against Worland,” coach Tyler Cram said. “They were aggressive and were able to defend the many attempts Worland had on offense. To allow only two goals (by Worland) is a huge improvement from last year. However, we continue to have areas of improvement which we will address this week in preparation for Rawlins.”

A gritty Torrington defense held Worland to one goal in the first half. Junior Avary Rising played goalie for the opening 40 minutes of regulation and collected nine saves.

Defensive hustle by the Torrington backfield, including junior Natalie Lira, junior Salma Beltran, sophomore Kynzi Thomas and junior Natalie Long, kept the ball out of the Lady Blazers’ goal area for most of the first half.

On offense, senior Marisol Munoz led several attacks into Worland’s terrotiry and junior Hallie made a shot on goal.

The halftime score favored Worland, 1-0.

Powerful kicks by Thomas and Lira in the beginning of the second half kept Torrington’s side of the field clear.

Worland broke through the Lady Blazers’ defense at 27:18 to score its second goal.

The Torrington defense tightened up to prevent the Lady Warriors from scoring for the remainder of regulation. Junior Kristin Prado served as goalie and picked up six saves. Thomas and Beltran both cleared the backfield and Lira protected the goal area at one point.

The Lady Blazers offense spent more time on Worland’s side of the field in the second half, culminating in shots on goal by Fuller, junior Kennedi Blevins and senior Emilia Bookout.

Torrington hosts Rawlins for its first home game on Friday, April 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
