GOSHEN COUNTY – According to a recent press release the Goshen County Emergency Management Agency will be conducting live testing on county learning sirens beginning the first week of April.

The release states the agency will begin full activation of one siren every six weeks from the first week of April through the end of August.

“Siren testing is important to ensure the entire system is working as it should and there are no interruptions when needed for real world incidents,” the release states.

According to Goshen County Emergency Management agencies website you can be prepared for emergency situations by taking four core steps before during and after disaster strikes. The first recommendation is that you stay informed by signing up for code red, the county’s emergency notification system to receive location specific safety information. Residents and visitors are also suggested to monitor radios and broadcast weather reports to stay current with changing conditions. The second step is to make a family emergency plan. The agency expresses how crucial it is to find a way to contact each other, a safe location away from your home to meet up if needed and a copy of your safety plan.

The third step is to build an emergency kit of essential items such as non-perishable foods water and prescriptions to last three days for each person in your household. In addition, the agency also suggests including a flashlight, radio, extra batteries, first aid kit, sanitation items, cash, blanket, and additional clothing in the kit as well. The fourth core step in being prepared for an emergency situation is getting involved with your local volunteer agencies and receiving training on basic disaster response skills.

Testing of sirens will be on a weather-permitting basis and will not be tested if the threat of severe weather exists. All tests will be conducted at 11 a.m.
