COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Six Eastern Wyoming College Lancers scored in double-figures in a 111-104 win over Planet Athletes on Friday at a tournament hosted by Air Force Prep.

“It’s really nice to have a lot of guys who can contribute,” coach Neal Sherbeyn said. “We are 9-10 guys deep and if the guys come in off the bench with effort, they can help out.”

The Lancers kept Planet to 40 points in the first half, while putting up 43 of their own. In the second half, EWC again edged out their opponents, 68-64, to seal the seven-point win.

Kolton Wall was the leading scorer for the Lancers, pouring in 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, with 4-of-6 shooting from three-point land. He also tied for the team-lead with seven boards, while finishing the night with two assists.

Jordan Mirich returned from injury to rack up 16 points in his season debut. Eight of his points came from the charity stripe. He also had three boards, two assists, a steal and a block. Jonathan Morrobel and Bruno Oliveira each had 14 points. They combined to shoot 10-of-16 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Morrobel had seven boards, two assists and two blocks, while Oliveira racked up three rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block of his own.

Alek Cosic and Nick Holmes had 12 points apiece. Holmes shot 6-of-9 from the floor and accounted for seven boards, four assists and two steals. Cosic chipped in seven rebounds and two steals, while shooting 5-of-9 from the floor.

Walker Korell turned in six points, five boards, two assists and a steal. Brandon Meadows, who had five rebounds, an assist and two steals, also had six points. Rhythm Ajanku poured in five points and rounded out his stat line with three rebounds, four assists and a steal. Daniel Wright and Ty Larson combined for five points, five rebounds, five assists and a steal.

Air Force Prep 97, EWC 88

On Saturday, EWC took on Air Force Prep, the host team for the tournament. The Lady Lancers rushed out to an early lead, holding a 39-30 advantage at intermission. The host team rallied back to tie the game at the final whistle, sending the game to overtime. EWC failed to limit Air Force Prep in overtime, falling 97-88.

Korell turned in the highest scoring total for EWC, racking up 21 points in the loss. He also had six rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block. Morrobel was just behind Korell, finishing with a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. The two combined for 15-of-23 shooting, including 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Meadows turned in 12 points off the bench in the loss, along with three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Ajanku was the final Lancer in double-figures, chipping in 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Wall had eight points, three rebounds and a steal.

Holmes and Cosic combined for nine points. Cosic, who had three rebounds and three assists, was second on the team with eight rebounds, while Holmes had three boards and three assists. Oliveira and Mirich racked up seven points combined. The duo also combined for six rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.

Sheridan 122, EWC 104

EWC returned home Monday night, taking on Sheridan College. The Generals jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Lancers reeled them back in, building a 13-8 lead of their own. The lead was short lived and Sheridan took a 60-42 lead into halftime.

With just over seven minutes to go, EWC cut the lead to 12 points (95-83) and they later cut the deficit to 10 points, but the Generals started to pull away again, taking the win 122-104.

“I know that we have a good ball team but we played a very good ball team,” Sherbeyn said. “We’ve got to learn how to win games. Every time we slow the game down, we go in a valley and we stay there for a long time.”

Six Lancers again scored in double-figures. Morrobel paced EWC with 18 points, which he paired with three rebounds and a block. Mirich was second in scoring, pouring in 16 points. He also had three boards and three assists.

Ajanku and Cosic turned in 14 points apiece and combined to shoot 11-of-19 from the field. The duo combined for five rebounds and two assists. Holmes, with 12 points, and Meadows, with 10 points, rounded out the top scorers for EWC. Meadows accounted for 11 boards to finish with a double-double, while Holmes was second on the team in rebounding, accounting for seven on the night.

Wall finished the night with nine points, while Oliveira added six and Korell poured in five. The three Lancers also combined for six rebounds and two assists.

“There are too many peaks and valleys and we are staying in the valleys for too long,” Sherbeyn said.

The Lancers have a 1-5 record this season. They return to their home floor in two games over the weekend, playing Western Wyoming Community College at 6 p.m. Friday and Central Wyoming College at 4 p.m. Friday.

“If we can stay consistent for 40 minutes and avoid the valleys, we will walk away with two W’s this weekend,” Sherbeyn said.
