DoorDash options grow

TORRINGTON – This week, Marlene’s Tortillas and More announced delivery would be available through DoorDash. They are the latest local establishment to join the app, alongside Wyoming Ranch Foods and fast-food restaurants such as Arby’s, Subway, Burger King, McDonald’s and Pizza Hut.

DoorDash has been a popular choice for food delivery since its inception in 2012, boasting 37 million monthly active users. While DoorDash has been highly successful in large cities, it has been slower to gain traction in small towns and rural areas due to limited restaurant options and less inconvenience in placing pick-up orders. DoorDash generates revenue by charging a service fee and increasing the price of menu items. For example, a Big Mac from McDonald’s drive-thru currently costs $6.20 after taxes, but ordering one through DoorDash totals $11.72, including $7.19 for the sandwich, $0.99 for delivery, and $3.54 for fees and taxes. Additionally, most people opt to tip their delivery driver. Fees are generally set at 15%, while the delivery fee remains consistent regardless of order size. However, the DoorDash app frequently offers discounts and free delivery promotions.

While some may find the added costs prohibitive, others are willing to pay the fees for the convenience. According to DoorDash, many of its users include workplaces, busy parents, or individuals with disabilities which make it difficult to leave home. Even those who don’t regularly use food delivery apps may find them helpful during emergencies or last-minute gatherings. For restaurants, food delivery apps present an opportunity to reach more customers. DoorDash also offers a pick-up option, allowing orders to be placed in advance without incurring additional fees.

Another benefit for the local community is the flexible employment opportunities DoorDash provides for delivery drivers. The only requirements to become a driver are an insured vehicle and a smartphone. Drivers can set their own schedules and availability, choosing which deliveries to accept based on pay, tips, or location. However, rejecting too many deliveries may lead to penalties from the company. For a smaller community like Torrington, the number of available deliveries may not support full-time employment, but it could serve as a secondary income source or a flexible job option for students.

While many may avoid DoorDash and similar food delivery apps due to the costs, others see value in the time and effort saved. The success of these ventures depends on balancing affordability for consumers with profitability for businesses and delivery drivers. As Marlene’s Tortillas and More joins the growing list of local options on DoorDash, Torrington residents now have another convenient way to enjoy their favorite meals—whether they choose to pay a premium for delivery or opt for in-person pick-up.
