LINGLE – A resounding 63-35 victory by the Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) Doggers against their cross-border rivals the Morrill Lions at home on Tuesday, January 28, improved LFL’s home winning streak to 20 consecutive games.
The Doggers remain at the top of their game with an undefeated record for the 2024-2025 season at 14-0 overall and 6-0 for the conference.
LFL left it all on the court on Tuesday in a high-octane first quarter that saw the Doggers net 22 points while holding Morrill to nine. LFL never looked back from that point and steadily widened its lead in the second half to a margin of nearly 30 points at the final buzzer.
“The guys once again played some tough defense against Morrill as we started the game off with good pressure, forcing six turnovers in the first quarter,” coach Chris Cook said. “On the offensive side, our guys went 7-for-9 shooting twos and 2-for-3 threes in the first quarter to jump out to a 22-9 lead after the first. Morrill had a couple good shooters, but our guys were up to the task of making it difficult for them.”
Overall, the Doggers outperformed Morrill in shooting at 60 percent compared to 28 percent by the Lions.
The Doggers hosted Southeast for the second cross-county rivalry game on Thursday. Results were not available at press time.
A tough defense and offense
The Doggers dominated the court in the first quarter. Senior Brody Roberts commenced scoring with a pair of free throws. Fellow senior Skyler Thomas found an opening in the perimeter to score while junior Brady Cook went on a four-point run.
Roberts grabbed a steal and scored on a fastbreak. Taking possession, senior Ned Nelson drained back-to-back treys.
Roberts scored again on a fastbreak after snagging a steal and Cook tossed in a close-range shot.
Cook rustled a steal and Roberts topped off scoring in the first quarter with a layup.
Both teams tallied 11 points in a physical second quarter. Cook set the pace offensively with five points, including a slam dunk. Roberts, Thomas and senior Cooper Smith each contributed buckets.
The Doggers controlled the scoreboard, 33-20, at halftime.
LFL outmaneuvered Morrill in the third quarter, 13-9. Three Doggers kept LFL on the scoreboard with seven points from Roberts, four by Cook and an inside shot from Thomas. Defensively, Roberts picked up two steals and Cook reached up for a block in the third.
The Doggers improved their advantage to nearly 30 points in an explosive fourth quarter with LFL netting 17 points while holding Morrill to six.
Nelson and Roberts forced two turnovers with a steal apiece. Nelson scored on a fastbreak and Roberts broke through Morrill’s perimeter to score.
Ned anchored a five-point run with a deep outside shot and a jumper.
Cook scored twice from the inside while Roberts tossed in a close-range shot.
Senior Kaiden Riggs rounded out scoring with a bucket late in the fourth.
Roberts set the momentum for the LFL offense against Morrill with 21 points, shooting 90 percent from inside the perimeter (9-for-10).
Cook and Nelson also scored double digits with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Thomas contributed six points with two apiece by Smith and Riggs.
Cook posted another season double-double with 10 rebounds. Roberts pulled down seven rebounds with four each by Nelson and Smith.
On defense, Roberts totaled six assists and Nelson four while Cook made three blocks.
The team shared the ball well with 22 assists overall, led by Roberts with six and Nelson five.
