GLENROCK – An explosive fourth quarter that saw the Torrington High School Blazers outscore the Glenrock Herders, 22-16, on the road on January 11 clinched the first season conference victory for Torrington against Glenrock, 51-44.

A scrappy, point-for-point battle ensued in the first half with the lead switching hands by quarter. Torrington regained the advantage at the end of the third quarter by one point, 29-28, before taking control of the scoreboard in the final eight minutes of regulation.

“Our young men found a way to win ugly (against Glenrock),” coach Logan Barker said. “I was proud of their ability to keep their composure even though we had three starters foul out. Everybody stepped up when we needed them to. This was our first conference game and we know what this means in regard to seeding later down the road. We knocked a lot of rust off from Christmas break. But proud is an understatement – these young men are warriors.”

The Blazers won a physical first quarter by one possession, 14-12. Glenrock turned the tables in the second quarter to outmaneuver Torrington, 14-7, and take the lead by five points, 26-21, at halftime.

The Blazers battled back in the third quarter. A tenacious Torrington defense held Glenrock to a single bucket while the Blazers netted eight crucial points to pull ahead, 29-28, by the end of the third.

The Blazer offense shifted into high gear in the final eight minutes of regulation, netting 22 points to 16 by Glenrock.

Junior Landre Greiman set the momentum for the Torrington offense against Glenrock with a season-high of 20 points. Sophomore Julian Stromski also tallied double-digit scoring with 10 points.

The senior starters on the team rounded out scoring, with Brayden Hime tossing in nine points, Weston Dyer five, Mac Hibben four and Ryan Moorehouse three.

The team shared the ball well with 10 total assists. Greiman led with four assists and Hibben three with one apiece from Dyer, Stromski and Hime.

A solid Blazer defense played a decisive role in Torrington’s victory over Glenrock. The Blazers forced 27 turnovers and topped its opponent in steals, 12-9. Torrington scored 14 points off turnovers while Glenrock only managed eight.

Greiman grabbed four steals while Moorehouse and Stromski both totaled three. Dyer and Hibben both picked up one steal apiece.

The Blazers recorded seven blocks, including three by Hime and two from Greiman.

On the boards, Hibben and Stromski both pulled down seven rebounds. Greiman and Hime each collected six rebounds with five from Dyer and three by Moorehouse.
