TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School boys wrestling team raised the bar in a home dual against Gering on Tuesday, January 28, with the Blazers trouncing the Bulldogs, 47-31.
The victory on Tuesday improved Torrington’s dual record for the 2024-2025 season to an undefeated 3-0.
The team also recognized its seniors before the dual – Brayden Dykes, Barrett Eichenberger, Moses Lopez, Hunter Massie, Tyler Nicolay, Kaden Romig and Griffin Wolfe.
“Last night’s dual was a good win for us because Gering is always a tough team that shows up to compete,” coach Cody Grant said. “It was a great atmosphere for senior recognition. I felt like the guys competed well. Even with some of our losses, they left it all on the mat.”
The younger wrestlers stepped up to the plate during the dual as well, Grant added.
“The difference in the dual was getting some wins from the younger and newer wrestlers like Moses Lopez at 215 pounds, (sophomore) Aaraon Chavez at 285 and (freshman) Bo Leever at 106,” Grant said. “With our team right now, we expect the upper classmen to bring it on a regular basis, but it was nice to see wins from some of the other guys on the team.”
Junior Colby Sandusky scored the first six points for Torrington when he pinned Maddox Gardner at 3 minutes, 1 second into the 150-pound match.
Up next, junior Brendan Woodard defeated Gabe Milton by technical fall (16-1) at 1:40 in the match at 157 pounds.
At 215 pounds, Lopez moved quickly to pin Noah Sentelle in the first sixty seconds of the match.
Chavez battled Richard Roberts into the third period at 285 pounds before Chavez felled Roberts with 44 seconds remaining on the clock.
In the 106-pound match, Leever tallied an additional six points for the Blazers when he defeated Payton Woodring by fall at 3:27.
Eichenberger topped off the evening with a victory at 138 pounds, pinning Drayvin Clymer 51 seconds into the match.
Freshmen Skylen Teague (126 pounds) and David Ibarra (190 pounds) won by open forfeit.
Both the Torrington boys and girls wrestling teams travel to Riverton for the annual Ron Thon Tournament on Friday and Saturday, January 31-February 1. Ron Thon is one of the largest wrestling tournaments in Wyoming and is good preparation for the upcoming postseason.
