CODY – The 2024 season ended early for the Torrington High School Blazers football team with the Blazers coming up short against Cody, 63-6, in the 3A quarterfinals on Friday, November 1.
The Blazers concluded the regular season with a 5-5 overall record and 3-2 conference record. Highlights included a three-game conference winning streak midway into the season.
On September 27, Torrington defeated Lander on the road, 33-2. The Blazers traveled to Rawlins on October 4 and cruised past the Outlaws, 42-14.
Torrington triumphed against Buffalo, 23-14, at home on October 11.
“Coming back into the 3A conference, we knew the competition would be a lot more stout,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “It was a good season overall, especially considering the bump up to 3A. It was excellent to get kids to come out for football this year, particularly those who hadn’t played for several years. Winning two conference road games was great, considering we had to travel longer distances for games in a tough 3A conference. I appreciate what all the players did this season, coming to practice each and every day to work hard.”
Stienmetz praised Cody as a “very talented” team.
In spite of the tough loss, the Blazers made positive plays in each quarter. Senior quarterback Ryan Moorehouse completed a pass to junior Colby Sandusky for a first down on the Blazers’ first possession in the opening quarter.
A deep punt by junior Holden Hackett forced Cody to begin its third possession from its own 20-yard line in the first quarter.
A six-yard pass play between Moorehouse and senior Nathaniel Stull resulted in another first down for the Blazers at the end of the second quarter. Moorehouse delivered a pass to senior Mac Hibben for 12 yards.
In the third quarter, an 11-yard pass play to Hibben resulted in a first down.
The Blazers reached the end zone on Torrington’s third possession of the second half. Sandusky returned Cody’s kickoff to the Blazers’ 18-yard line.
Moorehouse wound up a pass to Hibben. Hibben broke tackle and charged up the gridiron, completing a 67-yard pass play, striking deep into Cody’s territory.
Moorehouse launched the ball to sophomore Drew Kramer in the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown pass play.
Torrington also made positive gains on its final possession of the second half, including an eight-yard pass between Moorehouse and senior Nounou Braddy for a first down. Braddy rushed 14 yards on the ensuing play for another first down.
Moorehouse completed a 49-yard pass to Kramer, placing the Blazers in Cody’s territory. The clock counted down as Moorehouse wound up a 20-yard pass to Hibben.
Defensive highlights included 11 tackles by Stull and senior Kaden Romig. Junior Landre Greiman contributed nine tackles with eight apiece by seniors Andrew Haffner and Jeramiah Haffner. Hibben, senior Ethan Robbins and Braddy each tallied seven tackles, with six by Kramer, five from senior Brayden Hime and four apiece by Sandusky and senior Mekhi Porter. Romig and Greiman each posted a tackle for loss.
