TORRINGTON – The Torrington Trailblazer football team exploded for 56 points, while allowing only six in a wide margin of victory Friday against Wheatland in their first game of the season.
The Blazers got things started early, with a pass from Breyden Bivens to Nathan Stitt for a seven-point lead less than three minutes into the game. Torrington forced a three-and-out on Wheatland’s possession and Stitt blocked the punt. Bivens capped off the Torrington drive with a one-yard touchdown pass.
“It was nice that we were able to get off to a fast start, scoring right away and then forcing a three-and-out and blocking a punt,” coach Mark Lenhardt said. “It helped with the first-game nerves.”
The Blazers closed out the first quarter with two additional touchdowns, a three-yard run by Josh Posten and a 60-yard reception by Stitt, his second touchdown of the game.
After scoring 28 points in the first quarter, things slowed down in the second. Posten scored his second touchdown of the game, while Bryan Lemmon added another, with his coming from 20 yards out. Lemmon scored again after intermission and Torrington cruised to a 56-6 win, with Wheatland’s score coming late in the game.
“Everything did kind of click but our main thing is to always take what the defense gives us and we were able to do that well,” Lenhardt said of the high offensive output. “When you’re able to take what the defense gives you, it’s a great thing.”
