TORRINGTON – According to a recent announcement, Torrington will be hosting the first-ever Aerobatic Contest Over Wyoming’s Historic Plains, Torrington Tailslide AcroRodeo, 2025, sponsored by International Aerobatics Club (IAC) Chapter 12 on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18.
“Founded in 1900, Torrington has a rich history from its days as a railroad hub to its current status as an agricultural center known for its sugar beets and unique cultural events. This town, with its population just under 7,000, offers a quaint backdrop for what promises to be a sky-high spectacle. The event not only brings modern excitement to Torrington but also celebrates its past, connecting the community through shared experiences of awe and wonder,” the release explains.
The release further explains chapter 12 hopes to host the event yearly.
“This inaugural event, the Torrington Tailslide AcroRodeo, is more than just a competition; it’s the launch of what we hope will become an annual celebration of aviation, community, and the pioneering spirit of Wyoming. We aim to make this a cornerstone event, drawing visitors from far and wide, and fostering a deeper connection between the community and the skies above,” the release explained.
The contest is set to take place at the Torrington Municipal Airport (KTOR), which according to tailslide, is the hub for aviation enthusiasts and a gateway to the vast Wyoming skies.
“KTOR, with its two runways, has been serving the community since 1948, providing a perfect stage for aerial maneuvers. The airport’s location offers spectators an unobstructed view of the contest, set against the backdrop of the beautiful Wyoming landscape,” tailslide said.
The event will highlight aerial acrobatics with community involvement, fun for the whole family, according to the release.
“Witness pilots from across the region and from colleges across the United States, compete as they push the limits of flight with loops, rolls, spins and the signature ‘tailslide’ maneuver. We invite all of Torrington and surrounding areas to join us not just as spectators but as part of the event,” the release said. “Enjoy the awards ceremony, capture memories with a photo and say goodbye to the competitors with our Community Root Beer Float Farewell on Sunday afternoon.”
Local sponsors and volunteers are needed for the event and those who are interested can contact Wayne and Heidi Forbes at TorringtonTailslide@gmail.com.
“You can follow updates and news about the contest by following on X at @The25Tailslide and if you’d like to learn more about the sport of aerobatics follow on X at @AvalancheAero,” tailslide said. “Each day will feature competitions that are sure to excite and educate. Everyone from the youngest child to the oldest enthusiast can enjoy watching the contest. Bring a lawn chair and a lunch out to the airport or watch from a comfortable spot nearby.”
