Southeast splits with LFL, Glenrock

YODER – The Southeast High School volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with a split, defeating Lingle-Fort Laramie at home on Thursday but falling to Glenrock on the road Friday.

Against the Lady Doggers, the Lady Cyclones were forced to overcome early deficits in each set en route to the 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-20) sweep of the cross-county rivals.

In the opening set, multiple Southeast errors aided a 3-0 Lingle lead.

A kill by Southeast junior Sydney Anderson and an ace from senior Jordan Stoddard tied the match at four, but back-to-back aces from LFL sophomore Natalie Speckner put the Lady Doggers back in front.

Lady Cyclone junior Brenna Herring sparked a Southeast rally with a kill. It was the beginning of a 6-2 spurt to take a 14-11 lead.

It was a lead which Southeast never trailed for the remainder of the set.

In the second set, Stoddard put the Lady Cyclones on the scoreboard first, but Lingle scored the next six straight points. Multiple errors by Southeast and a pair of aces from LFL junior Hailey Smith gave the Lady Doggers a 6-1 lead.

Southeast chipped away at the deficit. Southeast junior Shelby Ekwall’s kill drew the Lady Cyclones within one at 13-12, and an attack error landed in the net for Lingle to tie the set at 13.

On the ensuing point, Stoddard tallied another block point, putting Southeast back in front and forcing the Lady Doggers to call a timeout.

Southeast scored 11 of the next 14 points to win set two.

In the third, a pair of serving aces from Lingle junior Baylee Skinner highlighted a 4-0 run early in the set.

The Lady Dogger lead reached as many as seven at 13-6 following an ace serve by freshman Brenly Shipp and a double hit by Southeast.

However, just like in the previous two sets, Southeast stormed back, tying the match at 16 apiece. A four-hit possession by Lingle and an ace by Herring pushed Southeast back to the lead. Two kills by Anderson and another four-hit possession by LFL, secured the sweep for the Lady Cyclones.

Anderson led Southeast with 14 kills, while Herring had eight and Stoddard seven. Herring also tallied two aces and 16 assists. Stoddard recorded three blocks, while senior Grace Desmond had 21 digs.

For Lingle, senior Tiah Meyer recorded a team-high five kills, while Speckner had four. Skinner had three aces, while Smith and Speckner had two apiece. Speckner also tallied a team-high 15 digs, while Meyer had eight. Skinner dished out 14 assists.

The next day, Southeast wrapped up the regular season with a trip to Glenrock.

The Lady Herders handed the Lady Cyclones a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) loss.

Anderson had 10 kills, while Stoddard had six. The Lady Cyclones had seven blocks for the match, including two apiece from Desmond, Stoddard and Herring and one from Anderson. Southeast had four players record double-figures in digs. Sophomore Sasha Haines had 14, while Anderson had 13. Desmond and Stoddard added 12 apiece. Herring tallied 13 digs, while sophomore Bailey Booth had six.

Southeast finishes the regular season with a 16-10 record, and the Lady Cyclones are scheduled to face Midwest in the first round of the 1A East Regional Tournament in Buffalo. First serve is scheduled for noon.
