Maintaining your water softener

The Water Drop

Water softeners are widely used in homes today; removing some of the minerals from household water greatly enhances the aesthetics of bathing and cleaning in your home. Softer water also protects household surfaces and appliances from mineral buildup, and reduces the amount of soap and detergents needed for cleaning. On the downside of softeners, they are also responsible for the majority of customer complaints received by the water department every year. Modern water softeners can generally last for years with little maintenance, but regular checks and cleaning will improve their lifespan.

Check salt levels monthly.

Know what type of salt to use. The type of salt used in these systems is also important; using the cheapest salt could lead to problems later on; be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on which type of salt to use. Break up salt bridges. Salt can form a solid layer or “bridge” in the brine tank. This prevents the loose salt on top from mixing with the water down below, preventing the softener from working.

Exercise the valves. About once a month, adjust the bypass valve to temporarily cut off the softener from your water supply. Twist the intake and outtake valves to the off position, then back to their original position. Return the bypass valve to its old position. This keeps the valves in good working condition.

Schedule a cleaning. The salt storage tank can also become contaminated and harbor the growth of unwanted substances which also may cause water quality problems. Older models can benefit from an annual cleaning of the brine tank.  Water softeners capture the naturally occurring minerals present in the water utilizing resin beads specifically designed to attract the particles, which are then rinsed away with salt brine during its regeneration cycle. Over years of service the resin beads can break down or become clogged with particulates resulting in poor performance or flow restrictions through the softener.

The softener manual should instruct you on preventative maintenance procedures and other guidelines on the proper upkeep of your water softener.

Please contact the water department if you have any questions about the quality of your water, or a water softener technician for questions on routine maintenance for your system.
