LARAMIE – Down 17-0 at the end of 15 minutes, the University of Wyoming Cowboys scored 20 unanswered points to take a 20-17 lead with 8:58 remaining in the game.

Texas Tech later tied the game at 20 with 41 seconds left on a 27-yard field goal, and in the end, Wyoming and the No. 24-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders needed two overtimes to settle a winner in the 35-33 Wyoming victory.

“That’s a cowboy-tough win,” UW head coach Craig Bohl said postgame. “Andrew Peasley, he’s as tough as boot leather.”

The senior quarterback ended the game 18-of-34 passing for 149 yards and rushed for 68 yards on 15 attempts.

Postgame, Peasley said the message to the team in the huddle and on the sidelines from the coaches was “one play at a time.”

Possibly, Peasley’s biggest play of the game came on 4th-and-7 in the second overtime period. 

The Red Raiders brought the house on the blitz, and he got the pass off to tight end John Michael Gyllenborg over the middle for the touchdown.

“We’d called that play before, but I was late to it. I completed it for like a 5-yard ball, but I knew I was hot and they were bringing pressure. If I would have put it on him, we would have scored way earlier,” Peasley said. “I told (offensive coordinator Tim Polasek), if we get another shot, call that play again. We called it, and I got it on him fast. I had to that time, because they were coming. That’s probably the best feeling, when you’re looking up in the sky, and your home team is going crazy.”

Sophomore Sam Scott secured the win, converting the two-point conversion on a run up the middle. It was the second time Scott found the endzone for the game. His first score was Scott’s first career touchdown, coming with 5:37 left in the third quarter to tie the game at 17. Scott ended the game with 44 yards rushing on seven carries.

“This is the type of team we have,” Bohl said. “And that started back after the bowl game. You don’t come up with these kind of wins without great chemistry because what occurs when you don’t have great maturity or great chemistry and you’re down like that, I’ve seen some ugly things get said on the sidelines and finger points. Guys were certainly upset, but they were encouraging one another.”

The win was the first over a top 25 team since 2016 when they beat San Diego State, and it was the fourth time the Cowboys had defeated a team from a Power Five conference in Laramie since 2004 with others being Ole Miss in 2004, Virginia in 2007 and Missouri in 2019.

Wyoming hosts Portland State on Saturday, Sept. 9 in a 2 p.m. kickoff in War Memorial Stadium.
