KEMMERER –The Wyoming Department of Transportation and Wyoming Game and Fish Department will host a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for the U.S. Highway 189 Kemmerer South Wildlife Crossing Project.
The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. at the turnout located at mile marker 12.8 on U.S. 189 south of Kemmerer.
The $33.1 million project combines a $24.3 million federal grant with $8.8 million in partner contributions. Oftedal Construction Inc. will build seven underpasses, one overpass and fencing along a 30-mile highway stretch.
Officials expect the crossings to eliminate 80% to 90% of wildlife-vehicle collisions along the corridor when construction finishes in October 2027. The project will benefit the Wyoming Range and Uinta deer herds and the Carter Lease pronghorn herd.
The ceremony will include a presentation followed by photos and media interviews. Parking will be available at the turnout, but officials recommend carpooling to reduce congestion. Attendees should dress for Wyoming weather and wear appropriate footwear. Safety vests will be provided.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will livestream the event on its Facebook and YouTube pages. If livestreaming is not possible, the ceremony will be filmed and posted on WYDOT and WGFD websites afterward.
