TORRINGTON – The Torrington Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will host a Halloween-themed 5K run and walk Saturday to raise funds for the department.
The “Heroes in Disguise 5K” encourages participants to wear costumes during the event scheduled for Oct. 4 at Jirdon Park. Check-in begins at 3 p.m. in the park’s parking lot with the run and walk starting at 4 p.m.
Before the main event organizers will host a 100-meter dash for children with prizes awarded to winners in each age group. The dash is free for participants ages five and under while other age groups pay the standard registration fee.
Age groups for the children’s dash include Tiny Tots (ages five and under) Kindergarten through second grade third through fifth grade and sixth through eighth grade.
The event combines fitness with Halloween festivities as runners and walkers can dress as their favorite characters while supporting local first responders. Participants may choose to run or walk the 3.1-mile course.
“We wanted to create a fun community event while supporting our volunteer fire department,” said a Ladies Auxiliary spokesperson.
The fire department’s Ladies Auxiliary organizes fundraising events throughout the year to purchase equipment and support department operations. The volunteer fire department serves Torrington and surrounding areas in Goshen County.
Registration is available online.
