Torrington tennis seventh at regionals

CHEYENNE – Both the Torrington boys’ and girls’ tennis teams finished seventh at the South Regional Tennis Championships over the weekend.

In the boys’ division, the Blazers scored 11 points to place seventh. Cheyenne Central won the team title with 57 points, while Laramie was second with 55.

In No. 1 singles action, Adam Bartlett went 0-2 on the weekend, falling to Cheyenne South’s Andrew Lock, 6-1, 6-0 and to Green River’s Chris Wilson 6-3, 6-1.

In the No 2 doubles bracket, Jorey Asmus lost his first-round match to Lukas Davidson of South 7-5, 6-0. Asmus rebounded with a 6-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Tanner Tryzbiak of Rock Springs. His weekend came to an end in the second round of the consolation bracket with a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Amando Henandez of Cheyenne East.

In doubles action, Elijah Hatch and Skyler Thomas advanced to the semfinal round with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win over Cheyenne East. They lost the in the semis 6-4, 6-2 to Laramie but battled back with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Green River. In the fifth-place match, Hatch and Thomas won the first set 6-1, but lost 6-4, 7-5 to Rock Springs in the other two sets.

In the No. 2 doubles bracket, Steven Schneider and Gabe Posten went 0-2, falling to Laramie 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and 6-3, 6-1 to South in the consolation bracket.

At the No 3 doubles matches, Marcus Jones and Ben Steinbrecher lost their opening round match 6-1, 6-4 to Cheyenne East, but the duo won their first consolation match 6-1, 6-2 over Cheyenne South. Their weekend came to an end in the consolation semifinals to Rock Springs 6-1, 6-2.

In the girls’ division, Torrington scored six points to place seventh. Cheyenne Central won the team championship with 69 points. Laramie was second with 46.

Olivia Judkins went 0-2, falling to Brianna Strauss of Green River 6-0, 6-0 and to Finley Kastens of Cheyenne East 6-0, 6-0.

In the No. 2 singles bracket, Madix McIntosh fell 7-6, 6-2 to Grace Gomez of Green River. She received a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket before losing to Hanna Peterson of Laramie 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles action, Madison Hatch and Juliana Russell went 1-2 at regionals. They lost to Laramie 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, but the Lady Blazer duo picked up a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Rawlins to reach the consolation semifinals. In the final match of the weekend, Russell and Hatch fell to Cheyenne East 6-0, 6-1.

In the No. 2 doubles bracket, Marlee Foy and Laney Grubbs went 0-2, falling to Rock Springs 6-1, 6-0 and to Cheyenne East 6-3, 6-2.

In the No. 3 doubles, Madison Boyden and Haley DeFoe also went winless, falling to Green River 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 and to Cheyenne East 6-4, 7-5.

Torrington heads to Gillette for the Wyoming State Tennis Championships Sept. 21-23.
