Tigers ‘C’ team defeats Saratoga at home opener

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Tigers ‘C’ Legion team opened its season with a bang, defeating the Saratoga Cutthroats in a double-header at home on May 24.

A rally by the Tigers in the third inning of the first game gave Torrington the momentum  to post the win, 8-6.

The second game came down to the wire, with Torrington securing another victory, 12-11.

Saratoga established a 2-0 lead by the top of the third inning in the first game. Digging deep, the Tigers responded in the bottom of the third inning with six runs to capture the initiative, 6-2. Kane Correa set the pace for the Tigers, driving in three runs with a single.

Saratoga tried to close the gap in the fifth inning, but the effort was too little, too late and the Tigers prevailed.

Overall, James Stienmetz led the Torrington offense with three hits in the first game. Correa drove in two runs while Brody Shields, Taven Reimers and Asher Mattis each drove in one.

Patience at the bat resulted in several walks, led by Colby Groene, Marek Nunnes and Mattis. Stienmetz stole five bases during the game.

Correa started as pitcher for the Tigers, striking out six. Mattis played relief in the seventh inning, striking out one.

In the second game, Torrington pulled ahead in the bottom of the first inning with a single by Barrett Bruch. Groene drew a walk.

Torrington remained ahead in the bottom of the second inning when Bruch and Stienmetz each batted in a run.

Pulling out all the stops in the third inning, the Tigers posted five runs. Shields batted a double while Correa and Bruch both singled.

Saratoga tied the game, 11-11, in the top of the fifth inning. An error in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the decisive run to the Tigers.

Stienmetz started as pitcher for the Tigers, striking out three. Bruch and Nunnes both stepped in as relief.
