Tigers ‘C’ splits vs. Alliance

TORRINGTON  The Torrington Tigers ‘C’ Legion team found itself pitted against a tough squad from Alliance, Nebraska, at an away double-header on Sunday, June 16.

The first game came down to the wire, with the first inning ending in a 3-3 stalemate. The Tigers took control of the scoreboard in the top of the second inning, driving in five runs to establish an 8-3 advantage.

Torrington remained ahead, 11-3, with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Alliance rallied in a nine-run sixth inning to overtake the Tigers by a single point and post a 12-11 victory.

The Tigers totaled seven hits in the first game, with two apiece by James Stienmetz and Colby Groene and one each from Barrett Bruch, Ebin Hunter and Asher Mattis. Stienmetz and Kane Correa both collected two RBI.

Correa started as pitcher for the Tigers, striking out three. Bruch and Mattis played relief, striking out two and one, respectively.

Turning the tables in the second game, the Tigers cruised past Alliance to capture a 13-2 win.

The game reached a 2-2 stalemate in the bottom of the third inning before Torrington seized the initiative with five runs in the top of the fourth.

The Tigers widened their lead with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings while a solid Torrington defense shut out Alliance from scoring after the second inning.

The Tigers tallied 13 hits against Alliance in the second game. Brody Shields, Mattis, Stienmetz, Groene and Hunter each had two hits while Bruch, Taven Reimers and Marek Nunnes collected one apiece. Shields and Stienmetz both drove in two runners.

On the mound, Groene stepped up as pitcher first for Torrington, striking out one. Nunnes played relief, striking out two.
