Tigers ‘C’ round out season with pair of wins

TORRINGTON  – The 2024 regular season came to a close for the Torrington Tigers ‘C’ Legion team with a win against both Alliance and Wheatland.

The action opened with an away double-header between Torrington and Alliance on Wednesday, July 10. Pulling out all the stops in the first game, the Tigers overwhelmed Alliance, 11-0. Alliance turned the tables in the second game to prevail, 6-3.

The Tigers hosted the Wheatland Lobos for the final home double-header of the season on Saturday, July 13. Battling back from an early setback in the first game, Torrington defeated Wheatland, 6-4.

The Lobos turned the tables in the second game to outscore Torrington, 5-1.

Alliance

Torrington took control of the scoreboard in the first inning of the opening game, 5-0. James Stienmetz set the pace for the Tigers in the top of the first with a single for two RBI. Colby Groene, Ebin Hunter and Kane Correa each singled for one run apiece.

Torrington expanded its lead with one run due to an error in the top of the second inning.

Five additional runs by the Tigers in the top of the fourth expanded Torrington’s lead, 11-0. Taven Reimers singled for two RBI while Brody Shields, Groene and Correa each singled for one RBI apiece.

A tenacious defense by the Tigers’ fielders shut out Wheatland for the remainder of the game. Stienmetz started as pitcher for Torrington, striking out four. Shields stepped in as relief.

Torrington posted 11 hits against Alliance in the first game. Correa led the Tigers with three hits for two RBI. Stienmetz and Groene both tallied two hits for two RBI each. Hunter collected two hits with one by Shields and Reimers.

In the second game, Alliance established an early 6-0 advantage by the end of the second.

The Tigers fought to close the deficit with one run in the top of the third and two in the fourth while Torrington’s fielders shut out Alliance in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.

Torrington ultimately came up short in the top of the fifth and Alliance remained ahead.

The Tigers collected six hits  – two apiece by Asher Mattis and Correa and one each by Barrett Bruch and Stienmetz. 

Marek Nunnes opened as pitcher for Torrington in the second game, striking out four. Shields played relief, striking out one.

Wheatland

The first game between the Tigers and the Lobos came down to the wire. Wheatland found itself up, 4-0, in the first inning.

A determined Torrington defense shut out Wheatland in the top of the second inning. Taking the initiative, the Tigers scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to snag the lead, 5-4.

Correa doubled in the fifth inning for one RBI. Reimers hit a grounder and reached first base on an error for one RBI.

Bruch singled on a full count for two RBI. Shields rounded out scoring in the fifth inning with a single for one RBI.

The Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the sixth when Groene sacrificed a grounder.

Torrington tallied six hits overall, led by Groene with two. Mattis, Bruch, Shields and Correa each posted one.

Bruch pitched the first five innings, striking out four. Stienmetz stepped in as relief, striking out two.

The second game resulted in a scoreless stalemate after the first three innings. Torrington got on the board with one run in the bottom of the fourth.

Wheatland responded with three runs in the top of the fifth inning and two in the sixth.

Overall, Torrington totaled three hits – one each by Stienmetz, Groene and Correa.

Correa opened as pitcher for the Tigers, striking out one. Nunnes and Shields both played relief.
