Tigers ‘C’ defeat Wheatland

WHEATLAND – The Torrington Tigers ‘C’ Legion team returned from a successful road trip to play the Wheatland Lobos junior varsity team with a set of wins on Sunday, July 7.

The Tigers overwhelmed Wheatland, 8-1, in the first game. The second game came down to the wire with Torrington scoring a decisive run in the top of the sixth inning to garner the win, 6-5.

Following scoreless first and second innings between Torrington and Wheatland in the opening game, the Tigers posted five runs in the top of the third. James Stienmetz and Kane Correa both singled for two RBI apiece.

Torrington widened its lead, 8-1, with one run in the top of the sixth inning and two in the top of the seventh. A solid defense by the Tigers shut out Wheatland in the bottom of the sixth and seventh.

Torrington collected 11 hits against the Lobos. Asher Mattis set the pace with three hits. Stienmetz and Correa both tallied two hits for two RBI. Marek Nunnes posted two hits with one apiece by Brody Shields and Taven Reimers.

On the mound, Correa pitched for the Tigers, striking out two.

In the second game, the Tigers found themselves up, 4-2, following a pair runs in both the third and fourth innings. Wheatland tied the game, 4-4, with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Torrington broke the deadlock with one run in the top of the sixth when Barrett Bruch singled.

The Tigers’ fielders shut out the Lobos in the bottom of the sixth inning and held Wheatland to one run in the seventh for Torrington to prevail.

Overall, the Tigers totaled seven hits against Wheatland. Stienmetz led with two hits and Mattis, Bruch, Colby Groene, Reimers and Nunnes each collected one hit.

Bruch started as pitcher for the Tigers, striking out two. Stienmetz played relief, striking out one.
