Thunder 16U fall to 308 United in nailbiter

SCOTTSBLUFF – A tenacious effort by the Torrington Thunder 16U softball team to close the gap against the Scottsbluff 308 United team in the fourth inning of an away game on June 4 ultimately found Torrington coming up short by a single point, 9-8, on the final scoreboard.

Torrington scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Charlee Floyd doubled and Skyla Wunder grounded out for one run apiece.

Scottsbluff responded with five runs in the bottom of the first to pull ahead, 5-2. The 308 United squad widened its lead, 8-3, in the bottom of the second inning.

Rallying in the top of the fourth inning, Torrington nearly bridged the deficit with five runs. Laney Grubbs set the pace for the Thunder with a triple resulting in two runs. Shaylyn Wunder and Ella Anderson both singled for one RBI. 

Overall, Floyd led the Thunder in batting against Scottsbluff with two hits for one run. Grubbs tallied one hit for two RBI. Skyla Wunder, Shaylyn Wunder, Sinai Hernandez and Anderson each tallied one hit for one run apiece. Aftyn Hager and Tatum Struble both collected one hit for the Thunder.

Torrington snatched six steals over the course of the game, led by Skyla Wunder and Struble.

Kennedy Reinhardt started as pitcher for the Thunder, striking out two. Struble served as relief and struck out one.

The Thunder board the bus for Loveland, Colorado, to participate in the Shootout on the Plains Tournament on Saturday.
