THS tracksters clinch medals in Scottsbluff

SCOTTSBLUFF – The Torrington High School track team kicked off the 2025 outdoor season with strong performances at the Binfield Invite hosted by Scottsbluff on Friday, March 28.

The Lady Blazers and Blazers returned home with 39 top-eight medals, including six golds, along with plenty of PRs and prequalifying times for state.

Team scores were not kept by meet organizers.

Junior Brooklyn Asmus clinched two gold medals in girls’ sprinting events. Asmus opened with a first-place finish in the finals for the 100-meters, posting a time of 12.06 seconds. The junior reached the finish line nearly one second ahead of the second-place finisher from Scottsbluff.

Asmus went on to garner gold in the 200-meter finals, clocking in at 25.16 seconds and reaching the finish line with more than three seconds to spare over the runner-up from Scottsbluff.

In the girls’ 300-meter hurdles, junior Natalie Hawes snagged gold with a time of 48.90 seconds. Teammate and fellow junior Trishell Pontarolo pulled into second place at 50.16 seconds.

Pontarolo captured gold in the girls’ triple jump, reaching a mark of 36 feet, 4 ½ inches. The junior pulled ahead of the second-place finisher from Scottsbluff by nearly two feet.

Senior Teryn Stokes advanced to the No. 1 spot in the leaderboard for the girls’ shot put, posting a mark of 34-10. Stokes finished with five feet to spare over the runner-up from Gordon-Rushville.

Sophomore Drew Kramer clinched gold in the boys’ triple jump, posting a mark of 41-07. Kramer beat LFL’s Brody Roberts by one foot.

“It was good to get the first meet out of the way and we were fortunate to have decent weather all day,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “I was proud of the upperclassmen for helping the younger athletes through their first high school meet. Hopefully, we continue to get better this week.”

Girls top eight

Pontarolo snagged silver in the long jump with a leap of 15-11 ¼.

Representing Torrington in the 1600-meters, senior Callie Taylor pulled into second place with a time of 6 minutes, 23.96 seconds.

Timing the 800-meters in at 2:35.83 seconds, freshman Illyana Ponce scooped up second place. Sophomore Sophia Wilson placed seventh in the event at 3:03.68.

Hawes clinched bronze in the finals for the 100-meters, timing in at 13.16 seconds. Pontarolo took fourth in the event, posting a time of 13.33 seconds, while freshman Ellis Mortimore finished eighth at 14.22 seconds.

Mortimore went on to pick up bronze in the finals for the 200-meters at 29.39 seconds.

Two hurdlers advanced to the finals in the 100-meters with Mortimore taking sixth place, clocking in at 19.84 seconds, and fellow freshman Grace Hibben finishing eighth at 20.95 seconds.

Hibben opened the meet with a third-place finish in the high jump, posting a mark of 4-08.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Hibben bagged eight place with a time of 56.58 seconds.

Wilson scooped up silver in the pole vault, reaching a mark of 8-00. Sophomore Esperanza Chavez came in third at 7-00.

Four tracksters made the top eight in the discus. Sophomore Kaia Jacobson led the Torrington pack with a silver medal and a mark of 88-06. Stokes took fourth place, clearing 82-03, while sophomore Catie Reimer placed fifth at 80-05. Senior Wittni Bugher rounded out the top eight in discus with a sixth-place finish and a mark of 79-02.

Jacobson went on to bag bronze in the shot put, hitting a mark of 28-07. Reimer finished fourth in the event at 28-06.

Sophomore Ava Mattis progressed to seventh place on the triple jump leaderboard with a mark of 28-07.

Relay highlights included a second-place finish by Chavez, Taylor, Ponce and Mattis in the 4x800-meters at 11:51.21.

Boys top eight

A trio of tracksters advanced to the finals in the 200-meters, led by Kramer with bronze and a time of 24.29 seconds. Junior Colby Sandusky finished fourth, posting a time of 24.84 seconds, while sophomore Ace Heron clinched eighth place at 25.81 seconds.

In the 100-meter finals, Kramer bagged fourth place, timing in at 11.65 seconds, with Sandusky in eighth place at 12.04 seconds.

Senior Tyler Nicolay pulled into second place in the 800-meters, clocking in at 2:19.22. Nicolay also finished third in the pole vault at 11-00.

Sandusky garnered bronze in the long jump, clearing 18-09.

Posting a mark of 39-09 in the triple jump, senior Evan Hellus placed fourth.

Freshman Cruz Lopez battled his way to third place on the high-jump leaderboard, reaching a mark of 4-10. Lopez also finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles at 56.44 seconds.

In throwing events, senior Brayden Hime snagged fourth place in the shot put, hitting a mark of 38-11. Sophomore Zeek Yung took sixth place in the event at 38-04.

Yung went on to clinch seventh place in the discus with a mark of 102-09.

Representing Torrington in the 1600-meters, freshman Ty Haeffelin picked up eighth place, clocking in at 6:49.65.

• Discus: Connelly in ninth place at 70-05, Mathson 10th at 68-00, Schmidt 16th at 59-11 and Felipe 18th at 57-01.
