TORRINGTON – The Laramie High School Plainsmen spoiled Torrington’s Senior Day festivities, sweeping the Blazers 5-0 in both the boys’ and girls’ matches on Friday afternoon.

Despite not winning a match, coach Lauren Shields said she saw improvement from her teams.

“Everyone lost to Laramie, but Laramie is always a great team,” Shields said. “Each of their positions vies for a state title each year. So, even though we didn't get a win, we are seeing solid improvement in our team getting several games off an opponent like Laramie.”

In the girls’ match, Katie Watson lost 6-4, 6-2, while Madix McIntosh lost 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

“Madix played a great first set,” Shields said. “She played her game and hit several winners. She backed off of her game in the 2nd set and played more conservative and lost that set. She continued to play more cautiously in the 3rd set and lost it 3-6 just before we would have had a lightning delay. Madix acknowledged that she played the way her opponent wanted her to in the third set and that's why she lost. She's really grown mentally as a tennis player this year.”

In doubles action, Juliana Russell and Madison Hatch fell 6-0, 6-2, while Marlee Foy and Laney Grubbs lost 6-2, 6-0. In the third doubles match, Madison Boyden and Haley DeFoe fell 6-3, 6-2.

In the boys’ action, Adam Bartlett lost 6-1, 6-0, while Jorey Asmus fell 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles action, Elijah Hatch and Skyler Thomas suffered a 6-0, 7-5 loss, while Steven Schneider and Gabe Posten lost 6-0, 6-0. In the third doubles match, Marcus Jones and Braxton Carlson lost 6-4, 6-3.

“They played great,” Shields said. “The boys worked hard and were in this entire match. I was super proud of both of these boys today.”

The Blazers return to the courts on Thursday, Sept. 7 in Laramie against Green River and Rock Springs. They will face Rock Springs at 10 a.m. and Green River at 1 p.m.
