LARAMIE – The Torrington High School tennis team traveled to Laramie to face Green River and Rock Springs last Thursday, marking the end of the regular season for the Blazers.

Torrington suffered losses to both Green River and Rock Springs.

The Blazers opened the day against Rock Springs. The boys lost 4-1 while the girls fell 5-0.

No. 2 singles player Jorey Asmus picked up the team’s lone win 7-6, 7-6.

“Jorey really played well and consistently,” THS coach Lauren Shields said. “He was pleased with his play.”

At the No. 1 singles spot, Adam Bartlett fell in three sets. He found himself down 5-2 but battled back to force a tie breaker. Bartlett led the tie breaker 6-3 before losing 8-6.

All three doubles teams lost their matches. The No. 3 team of Ben Steinbrecher and Marcus Jones led in both sets before ultimately coming up short.

“There just seemed to be some mental errors or inexperienced moments at critical times that didn’t allow for them to get the win,” Shields said.

In the girls’ match, Rock Springs picked up a 5-0 win over the Lady Blazers.

Katie Watson returned to the lineup in the No. 1 spot despite battling an injury.

“She went out on the court, worked had and played her game,” Shields said.

Madix McIntosh battled with serving issues in her loss.

“It was a windy day in Laramie, she double faulted every point in her first service game,” Shields said. “Once she figured that out, she started playing much better.”

Later in the day, both Torrington teams picked up one win against the Green River Wolves.

McIntosh picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win in the girls’ No. 2 singles match in a 4-1 loss to Green River.

“She played hard and when she would play her game, she is successful,” Shields said. “Madix is athletic enough that she can chase down some balls other girls can’t get to.”

Olivie Judkins slid back into the No. 1 singles spot after Watson was unable to go, falling 6-0, 6-0.

All three of the doubles wins went to Green River.

In the boys’ match, the No. 1 doubles team of Elijah Hatch and Skyler Thomas picked up a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory as the team’s only win in a 4-1 loss.

“They were playing 1-up,1-back and that made it easy for Green River to win the first set,” Shields said. “They started taking the net more as a doubles team and won the next two sets in order to get the win.”

For the second time in the day, Bartlett went three sets, falling 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

“He came out strong and won the first set fairly quickly,” Shields said. “Then he, again, dug himself a hole in the next two sets. Adam was pretty disappointed in his play that day as a whole.”

In the other doubles action, Steven Schneider and Gabe Posten, as well as Jones and Steinbrecher went three sets, falling in the third set.

The Blazers now turn their attention to the South Regional Tournament to be held at Cheyenne South on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16.
