THS softballers win home opener

TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers softball team roared onto the field at the 2025 home-opener against Cheyenne South on Tuesday, March 25, to go undefeated in the conference double-header at Jirdon Park.

The Lady Blazers battled Cheyenne South through seven tight innings in the first game to pull ahead for the win, 5-4. Torrington cruised past the Lady Bison in the second game, 15-0.

Game 1

Solid fielding by the Lady Blazers shut out Cheyenne South in the first two innings. Junior Kennedy Reinhardt pitched for Torrington and struck out two in the top of the first inning and one in the second.

The Lady Bison grounded out to second baseman and sophomore Lyla Wernsman in the top of the first inning, with Wernsman passing the ball to first baseman and sophomore Aftyn Hager.

In the second inning, Cheyenne South grounded out to Reinhardt and then sophomore Rein Coulson at shortstop with Hager at first base in both plays.

The Lady Bison scored two runs in the top of the third inning.

Torrington responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. Junior Sinai Hernandez ran home on a dropped third strike by Cheyenne South. Sophomore Macauley McIntosh laid down a sacrifice bunt, driving in Hager. Coulson singled and sophomore Kadence Schamel reached home.

Torrington’s fielders shut out Cheyenne South in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. 

In the top of the fourth, South grounded out to Reinhardt while the pitcher struck out one and Hernandez fielded a fly ball in right field.

The Lady Bison lined out to Wernsman in the top of the fifth. Wernsman fielded a pop fly and Coulson caught a ground ball, sending it to Hager on first.

Torrington scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull ahead, 5-2. Junior Skyla Wunder singled for two RBI.

In the top of the sixth inning, Cheyenne South grounded out to Wersman twice and hit the ball to Reinhardt for the third out without an additional run on the scoreboard.

The Lady Bison narrowed Torrington’s lead, 5-4, with two runs in the top of the seventh. On Cheyenne South’s third attempt, the Lady Bison grounded out to Kadence Schamel at shortstop. Schamel delivered a throw to Coulson who then sent it to Hager.

Torrington collected a total of seven hits against Cheyenne South. Hernandez tallied three hits with one apiece from Coulson, Wunder, Reinhardt and Hager. 

Reinhardt pitched seven innings, striking out four.

Game 2

Torrington hit the ground running to establish a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Coulson tripled for three RBI. Wunder singled for one run and freshman Olivia Meyer sacrificed a grounder.

Torrington added three additional runs in the bottom of the second inning while shutting out Cheyenne South in the top. 

The Lady Blazers clinched the win with five more runs in the third inning. Meyer tripled for two RBI. Freshman Emily Audette also hit a triple for one RBI. Fellow freshman Makayla Burkart hit a grounder for the fifth run.

Two additional runs by the Lady Blazers in the bottom of the fourth inning topped off the scoreboard. Sophomore Jadyn Chilson singled for one run while Wunder reached home on a wild pitch.

The Lady Blazers totaled nine hits against Cheyenne South, led by freshman Ashlyn Schamel with two. 

Meyer, Wunder, Chilson, Coulson, McIntosh and Kadence Schamel each collected one hit.

Freshman Jadah Jacobson stepped up to the pitcher’s mound for four innings, striking out two.
