TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers softball team showed tenacity against the Wheatland Lady Bulldogs in a conference makeup game at home on Tuesday, April 22.
Wheatland handily won the first game of the double-header, 15-4. In the second game, the Lady Blazers determined to fight back in a cliffhanger as Torrington came within one or two runs of overtaking Wheatland. The final score ultimately favored the Lady Bulldogs, 13-11, but the Lady Blazers battled through the final inning.
Game 1
Wheatland opened with two runs in the top of the first inning while shutting out Torrington in the bottom.
The Lady Blazers’ fielders stepped up to prevent runs by the Lady Bulldogs in the top of the second inning. Freshman Olivia Meyer fielded a fly ball in right field. Wheatland popped a fly to sophomore Rein Coulson at shortstop for the second out before sending a grounder to sophomore Kadence Schamel at third.
Wheatland took control of the scoreboard in the top of the third inning with 11 runs.
The Lady Blazers collected six hits against Wheatland, led by Schamel and Coulson with two apiece. Junior Skyla Wunder and senior Hope Hager each tallied one hit.
Freshman Jadah Jacobson pitched the first 2.2 innings for Torrington, striking out one. Junior Kennedy Reinhardt came in as relief and struck out two.
Game 2
The Lady Blazers responded to one run by Wheatland in the top of the first inning with three in the bottom. Freshman Shaylyn Wunder doubled for two RBI and Reinhardt hit a sacrifice grounder to drive Wunder home.
Wheatland pulled ahead with four runs in the top of the second inning while preventing Torrington from scoring in the bottom. Two more runs by the Lady Bulldogs in the top of the third widened Wheatland’s lead, 7-3.
In the bottom of the third, Shaylyn Wunder stepped up to bat and smashed a triple into right field to drive home Schamel, Coulson and Skyla Wunder. Shaylyn Wunder’s triple narrowed Wheatland’s advantage to a single run, 7-6.
The Lady Bulldogs outscored Torrington by one decisive run, 6-5, in a neck-and-neck fourth inning to take the win.
In the bottom of the fifth, Skyla Wunder hit a grounder, sending Schamel home. Shaylyn Wunder lined up for a single and one RBI. Sophomore Lyla Wernsman singled for one run and Schamel drew a walk to drive junior Laney Grubbs home.
Torrington tallied nine hits against Wheatland. Shaylyn Wunder set the momentum for the Lady Blazer offense with three runs for seven RBI. Coulson contributed two runs with one apiece by Meyer, Schamel, Skyla Wunder and Wernsman.
Reinhardt opened as pitcher for the Lady Blazers, striking out one. Jacobson and freshman Emily Audette played relief with Jacobson striking out one.
Torrington travels to play Cheyenne Central on Friday.
