TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers wrapped up their inaugural varsity season at the 4A South regional softball tournament in Laramie on Friday, May 16.
Torrington drew the host team in the quarterfinals. The game tied, 2-2, at the top of the third inning and remained close through the fifth inning before a 6-0 run by Laramie in the sixth clinched the win for the Lady Plainsmen, 11-4.
The Lady Blazers squared off against Green River in the consolation bracket. Torrington battled the Lady Wolves to a 7-7 deadlock in the top of the third inning. Green River pulled ahead with seven runs in the fourth inning and six in the fifth inning to clinch the win, 20-10.
The Lady Blazers collected six victories over the course of Torrington’s first season as a varsity softball team. The Lady Blazers’ young squad went head-to-head against much larger teams with several years of experience.
The Lady Blazers defeated Cody, 6-5, on March 21 followed by a 10-4 victory against Jackson on March 22. Torrington beat Cheyenne South in a home double-header on March 25 (5-4 and 15-0).
On April 11, the Lady Blazers scored a 14-9 win against Green River. Torrington went on to beat Rock Springs, 12-11, on April 12 and Wheatland, 9-4, on May 6.
Regionals ñ Laramie game
The first two innings between Torrington and Laramie ended with the Lady Plainsmen up, 2-0.
Torrington rallied in the top of the third inning with two runs to tie the game, 2-2. Freshman Shaylyn Wunder doubled for two RBI.
Laramie pulled ahead, 4-2, in the bottom of the third inning.
Torrington’s fielders shut out the Lady Plainsmen in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Hope Hager fielded a fly ball in left field. Laramie grounded out to sophomore Kadence Schamel at third for the second out. Schamel tossed the ball to junior Kennedy Reinhardt at first base to complete the double play.
Both teams collected one run in the fifth inning, with sophomore Rein Coulson hitting a single and driving in one.
Laramie took control of the scoreboard in the sixth inning, outmaneuvering Torrington, 6-0.
Torrington tallied nine hits against Laramie, led by Coulson with three. Freshman Olivia Meyer and Shaylyn Wunder both recorded two hits with one apiece by Schamel and junior Sinai Hernandez.
Freshman Jadah Jacobson opened as pitcher for the Lady Blazers, striking out three. Fellow freshman Emily Audette played relief.
Green River game
Torrington won the first inning against Green River, 3-1. Coulson doubled for one RBI.
Junior Skyla Wunder stepped up to bat and hit a home run into center field for two RBI.
Green River responded with six runs in the bottom of the second inning after shutting out Torrington in the top.
The Lady Blazers fired back with four runs in the top of the third to tie the game, 7-7.
Coulson smashed a homer into left field for two RBI. Shaylyn Wunder and Skyla Wunder each scored on an error.
The Lady Blazers prevented Green River from scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Audette struck out a runner while Coulson fielded two consecutive grounders at shortstop, sending the ball to Shaylyn Wunder at second base on both occasions.
Green River pulled ahead with a 7-2 run in the fourth inning and outscore Torrington, 6-1, in the fifth.
The Lady Blazers collected 11 hits against Green River. Coulson paced the Torrington offense with three hits for four RBI. Skyla Wunder netted three hits for three RBI. Meyer tallied two hits with one apiece from Schamel, Shaylyn Wunder and Reinhardt.
Jacobson pitched the first inning for Torrington with Audette and Reinhardt coming in as relief.
