RIVERTON – When the dust settled at the annual Ron Thon Memorial Tournament in Riverton, three grapplers from Torrington High School stood on the podium with medals at the three-day event from January 30-February 1.
Ron Thon is the largest high school wrestling invitational outside of the state tournament in Casper, featuring 41 teams of all classifications vying for the title in the boys’ division and 39 programs competing on the girls’ side.
Freshman Catherine Hendricks snagged second place in the girls’ 125-pound weight division. Sophomore Cathryn Reimer finished with fifth place in the girls’ 235-pound bracket.
In the boys’ tournament, junior Ty Albaugh clinched fifth place at 150 pounds.
Overall, the Blazer boys came in 16th as a team with 48 points. The Lady Blazers advanced to 24th place on the team leaderboard with 39 points.
Girlsí tournament
Hendricks progressed to the quarterfinals in the girls’ 125-pound bracket where she pinned Zuri Saunders of Cheyenne Central at 3 minutes, 20 seconds.
In the semifinals, Hendricks battled Campbell County’s Rylie Heibult into the third period before Hendricks won by fall at 3:05.
The first-place match came down to the wire between Hendricks and Lander’s Jordan Nielsen with Nielson – a senior – ultimately getting the pin at 5:46.
Reimer fought her way back through the consolation bracket in the girls’ 235-pound division to square off against Juana Hines of Wind River in the fifth-place match. Reimer made quick work of her opponent, winning by fall with 10 seconds to spare in the first period to take home a fifth-place medal.
Junior Aubree Fahrmeyer won two matches at 135 pounds to score seven team points for the Lady Blazers.
Boysí tournament
In the boys’ tournament, Albaugh pinned Cokeville’s Flint Linford 44 seconds into the quarterfinal match at 150 pounds. Albaugh fell in the semifinals but came back to pin Evanston’s Garret Horton at 1:45 in the fifth-place match.
Senior Barrett Eichenberger defeated opponents in three matches to post 10 team points for the Blazers in the 138-pound bracket.
At 157 pounds, junior Brendan Woodard went 3-2 to tally nine team points for Torrington.
Senior Tyler Nicolay collected seven points for the Blazers with two wins in the 120-pound classification.
Senior Kaden Romig battled back to win three consolation rounds and secure five team points for Torrington.
