THS golf team opens 2023 season in Douglas

DOUGLAS – The Torrington High School golf season began last Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 9-10 at the Douglas Invite.

The tournament was dominated by 4A and top-tiered 3A teams on both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.

Cheyenne East, Riverton and Kelly Walsh swept the top three spots in the boys’ divison. East won the team title with 612, while Riverton was second with 613. Kelly Walsh was third with 614. The Blazer boys were 11th with a two-day total of 751.

“Our young kids got an eye opener the first day but everyone improved and shot a better round on day two,” coach Jeff Halley said. “The second day scores were a little more what we were expecting.  It will hopefully give us something to build on.”

Torrington shot a 396 on day one and improved 41 strokes on day two for a 355.

Mason Wilkes led the Blazers with a two-day total of 176. He shot an 89 on Wednesday and an 87 on Thursday. Caleb Kelly finished one stroke behind Wilkes with a 177. He shot a 95 on day one and improved by 13 strokes on day two for an 82. Connor Correll also improved from day one to day two, shooting rounds of 101 and 88 for a two-day total of 189, while Spencer Booth shot 111 and 98 to finish with a 209. Mason Unverzagt shot rounds of 128 and 122 to finish with a 250.

In the girls’ division, Natrona County won the team title with 527, while back-to-back 3A state champion Wheatland finished second with 540. Torrington placed seventh with 657, shooting a 343 on day one and 314 on day two.

Madyson Banister led the Lady Blazer squad with a two-day total of 209, firing rounds of 112 and 97. Kayliegh Waymire shot a 216 with rounds of 111 and 105. Sarah Birdsall had rounds of 120 and 112 for a total of 232, while Madison Gibson shot a 240 after rounds of 128 and 112.

The Torrington golf teams head to Cheyenne for a tournament scheduled for Thursday and Friday, 17-18. Action begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. on Friday.
