Tennis trio breaks into top four at regionals

GREEN RIVER – The Torrington High School tennis team returned from the South regional tennis tournament in Green River with a bag full of hardware and three athletes snagging top-four placings on September 21.

Full results and comments from the coaching staff will run in the Friday edition of the Torrington Telegram.

THS head tennis coach Lauren Shields was named the South Conference coach of the year at regionals. 

The Blazer boys captured fourth place as a team with 28 cumulative points, beating Rock Springs, Green River, Rawlins and Cheyenne South. The Lady Blazers placed seventh with eight team points.

Senior Elijah Hatch secured second place in No. 2 singles. Hatch defeated Emilio Corona, of Rock Springs, in the opening match, 2-1. Hatch won the first set, 6-2, fell in the second set, 6-2 and rallied to win the third set, 6-3.

Advancing to the semifinals, Hatch scored a 2-1 victory against Cheyenne East’s Peyton Seelye. Hatch won the first set, 6-4. Falling in the second set, 6-2, Hatch came back to win the third set, 6-4.

The championship match pitted Hatch against Nicholas Thornell, of Cheyenne Central. Hatch fell, 6-2 and 6-1, to place second overall.

In the boys’ No. 2 singles, senior Skyler Thomas came in fourth place.

Thomas fell in the opening match, 2-0, to Cheyenne Central’s Thomas Smedley. 

Thomas battled back in the consolation bracket to defeat Tanner Tryzbiak, of Rock Springs, 6-3 and 6-0. Progressing to the consolation semifinals, Thomas beat Rawlins’ Lincoln Searle in two sets, 6-3 and 6-0.

In the consolation finals, Thomas came up short in a rematch against Smedley. Thomas fell in the first set, 6-3, before winning the second set, 6-1, and falling in the third, 6-1.

Senior Madix McIntosh clinched fourth place in the girls’ No. 1 singles.

McIntosh fell in the opening match to Peyton Thorburn, of Laramie, by a 6-0 margin in both sets.

In the consolation bracket, McIntosh rallied to defeat Cheyenne South’s Adyson Harman in two sets, 6-1 and 6-1.

Squaring off against Rylin Arnell, of Green River, in the consolation semifinals, McIntosh won, 2-1. McIntosh beat Arnell in the first set, 6-1. Arnell won the second set, 6-3, before McIntosh responded to defeat Arnell in the third set, 6-4.

McIntosh came up short, 2-1, in the consolation finals against Rawlins’ Kristen Anderson. McIntosh fell in the first set, 6-2 and won the second set, 6-2, before falling in the third, 6-3.
