LARAMIE – The Torrington High School tennis teams rounded out the regular season with matches against Rock Springs and Green River hosted by Laramie on Thursday, September 12.

The matches between Torrington and Rock Springs came down to the wire, with both the Blazer boys and Lady Blazers coming up short by a single match, 3-2.

The boys fell to Green River, 4-1, with the girls trailing Green River, 5-0.

Senior Elijah Hatch won the No. 2 singles match against Rock Springs in two sets. Hatch also triumphed against Green River’s Jake Nielsen in three sets. Hatch won the first set, 6-2, before Nielsen responded in the second, 6-2. Digging deep, Hatch won the tiebreaker set, 6-4.

Senior Skyler Thomas defeated Rock Springs in the No. 1 singles match, 2-0.

“The boys did fairly well against Rock Springs,” coach Lauren Shields said. “Skyler and Elijah came away with victories over Rock Springs. Both played well against Green River, too.

“I am pleased to see progress from them at the doubles teams at this point in the season, though. (Seniors) Gabe Posten and Marcus Jones continue to work together to find ways to be close in about every match.”

In girls varsity, senior Madix McIntosh won the No. 1 singles match against Rock Springs, 2-0.

Junior Haley DeFoe and sophomore Keelin Connelly defeated the No. 2 doubles team from Rock Springs in three sets. Rock Springs won the first set, 6-3. DeFoe and Connelly turned the tables in the second and third sets, winning both by a 7-5 margin.

“The girls did well against Rock Springs and Green River,” Shields said. “Laney Grubbs played well at No. 2 singles against Rock Springs but didn’t get the win. Against Green River, Aftyn Hager played No. 2 singles and she worked hard and had some great points.”

The girls’ doubles teams showed improvement in Laramie, Shields added.

“These girls could make some noise at regionals this week if they keep playing like that.”
