The Southeast Lady Cyclones basketball team opened the 2024-2025 winter season on a high note with an undefeated record at the Burns Winter Classic.

BURNS – The Southeast High School Lady Cyclones basketball team kicked off the 2024-2025 winter season on a high note by going undefeated at the Burns Winter Classic tournament from December 13-14.
Southeast stepped up and controlled the scoreboard in each game regardless of the size of its opponent, ranging from 2A programs like Moorcroft, to 3A Burns and 4A Cheyenne South.
The Lady Cyclones opened the tournament with a 38-24 victory against Moorcroft on Friday morning. Later on Friday, Southeast won a neck-and-neck battle in four physical quarters against Tongue River by a single possession, 22-19.
Saturday’s action featured a game between the Lady Cyclones and Cheyenne South with Southeast winning by a 43-26 margin.
Determined to close out the tournament with another victory, the Lady Cyclones triumphed against the host school, Burns, in a game that came down to the wire, 39-33.
“The kids did a good job for the opening weekend at Burns even though we were not overly prepared,” coach Jennifer Scheer said. “It was good to play these games to judge where we are as a team. I saw great things on the court and there were quality minutes from every kid who stepped on the floor. We have plenty of things to work on and we will try to keep expanding on the good foundation we built this weekend.”
Moorcroft
Southeast won a close first quarter against Moorcroft, 6-5. Defensive pressure by junior Kaycee Kosmicki, senior Brooklyn Leithead, senior Anna Hartman and sophomore Brylie Booth forced multiple turnovers while Kosmicki, Booth and junior Brea Mills each scored an inside shot.
The Lady Cyclones topped Moorcroft in scoring in the second quarter, 17-11. Kosmicki set the momentum with seven points while Booth and junior Keana Llewellyn each netted a jumper.
The halftime score favored the Lady Cyclones, 17-11.
Southeast outpaced Moorcroft in the third quarter, 13-10, to lead by nine points, 30-21, going into the fourth quarter. Kosmicki scored nine points in the third quarter with Booth contributing four. Kosmicki and junior Taylor Tregemba both picked up steals on defense.
The Lady Cyclones tossed in eight points in the fourth quarter while holding Moorcroft to three. Southeast’s second string entered the fray with points by sophomores Lyla Wernsman and Macy Tremain.
Kosmicki led the Lady Cyclones in scoring against Moorcroft with 20 points. Booth tallied eight points, Wernsman four with two apiece by Tremain, Mills and Llewellyn.
Tongue River
Southeast controlled the scoreboard for the first quarter against Tongue River, netting six points to three by the Lady Eagles. Tregemba led the way offensively with four points while Kosmicki, Booth and Hartman snatched several steals on defense.
Each team scored six points in the second quarter, with Booth tallying four and Wernsman two.
Southeast led at halftime by a single possession, 12-9.
The Lady Cyclones remained ahead in the third quarter, outmaneuvering Tongue River, 4-2.
Tongue River scored seven points to Southeast’s six in the fourth quarter, but the attempt by the Lady Eagles to close the gap was too little, too late.
Booth scored six points against Tongue River, Kosmicki five, Tregemba and Leithead both four, Wernsman two and Llewellyn one.
Cheyenne South
The Lady Cyclones dominated the first quarter against Cheyenne South, tossing in 12 points to seven by the Lady Bison. Llewellyn drained an outside shot and scored a jumper. Kosmicki converted an and-1 while Leithead scored from inside the perimeter. On defense, Leithead and Hartman both picked up steals.
Southeast shifted into high gear in the second quarter, outpacing Cheyenne South, 15-3. Sophomore Rein Coulson stepped up for the Lady Cyclones offense with six points while Booth and Kosmicki each contributed four.
The halftime score favored Southeast by 17 points, 27-10.
The Lady Cyclones hammered away at Cheyenne South in the third quarter, posting 14 points and holding Cheyenne South to nine. Kosmicki and Tregemba both tallied four points.
The Lady Cyclones pulled ahead, 41-19, at the end of the third quarter and Southeast’s second string finished off the job in the fourth quarter.
Llewellyn led Southeast in scoring against Cheyenne South with 13 points. Kosmicki and Coulson both netted eight points with four each from Leithead, Booth and Tregemba.
Burns
A point-for-point battle in the first two quarters ended with Southeast ahead by a single point, 20-19, at halftime. Kosmicki led Southeast in scoring in the first half with eight points. Booth, Leithead, Hartman, Tregemba and sophomore Haylee Ekwall each contributed a bucket.
The back-and-forth continued into the third quarter with both teams scoring 10 points. Hartman and Leithead forced turnovers with several steals while Booth tallied five points and Kosmicki four.
Southeast remained up by one point, 30-29, as the final quarter commenced.
The Lady Cyclones outscored Burns in the fourth quarter, 9-4, to seal the win. Kosmicki converted an and-1 and sank a close-range shot. Booth tossed in a jumper and Llewellyn went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe.
Kosmicki posted 17 points against Burns, Booth nine, Leithead four, Llewellyn three and Ekwall, Hartman and Tregemba two apiece.
