TORRINGTON – The Torrington Sharks swim team made waves at the season opener it hosted at the Dale Jones Municipal Pool on Saturday, June 7.

Athletes representing a cross-section of Goshen County schools competed in all age divisions from eight and under (8U) to high school (15-18).

The Sharks competed against teams from Bridgeport, Alliance, Hemingford and Sidney with nearly 180 young swimmers entering the feeding frenzy for the top spot in individual events and relays. 

Overall, Torrington reeled in 11 first place finishes between the boys’ and girls’ divisions.

Striking gold

Atana Walter picked up gold in two events for the girls’ 13-14 age division. In the 100-yard individual medley, Walter pulled into first place, hitting the finish line with a time of 1 minute, 24.03 seconds.

Atana Walter went on to win the 200-yard individual medley, posting a time of 3:13.44.

Tiffany Krueger captured gold in the 100-yard freestyle for the girls’ 15-18 age bracket, clocking the race in with a time of 1:09.84 seconds.

Timing the boys’ 8U 25-yard butterfly in at 41.39 seconds, Ames Birkley scooped up first place.

In the girls’ 50-yard breaststroke (13-14 age division), Lexi Wilkie reached the finish line in first place with a time of 38.86 seconds.

Taelyn Stokes beat 13 other athletes in the girls’ 25-yard breaststroke (9-10) to punch in a first-place finish at 23.46 seconds.

Posting a time of 44.89 seconds in the girls’ 50-yard breaststroke for the 13-14 age division, Ariana Posten snagged gold.

Cooper Walter garnered gold in the 100-yard individual medley (11-12), timing in at 1:46.72.

Huck Walter captured gold in the boys’ 8U 25-yard freestyle with a time of 19.90 seconds.

Alexis Martin finished ahead of 16 athletes in the girls’ 9-10 25-yard freestyle to clinch first place at 20.19 seconds.

Rounding out first-place finishes, Emily Milner collected gold in the 200-yard individual medley for the girls’ 11–12-year division, clocking in at 3:33.57.
