TORRINGTON – The Torrington senior American Legion baseball team picked up a conference split with the Sheridan Jets on a hot Tuesday afternoon at Dean Bullock Field.

The Tigers scored a 9-0 victory in game one but fell in game two 6-5.

After two scoreless innings, Ben Firminhac got the offense going with a double to right field. Landre Greiman walked, and Mac Hibben doubled to drive in the first runs of the game.

It was the first of five runs the Tigers scored in the third inning.

With the bases loaded and no one out, Ryder Hackbarth walked, bringing in another run. Nolan Long and Austin Short also tallied hits and drove in runs before Sheridan was able to get out of the inning.

The Tigers added three more in the fourth inning.

Firminhac led off with a single, and Hibben, Shields, Long and Moorehouse added four more hits, pushing the Torrington lead to 8-0.

In the fifth, Firminhac’s sacrifice fly drove in the Tigers’ final run.

During the Tigers’ offensive output, Greiman limited Sheridan to only one hit. The no-hitter was broken by the Jets with one out in the fifth inning.

Greiman picked up the win, striking out one and walking two over five innings on only 59 pitches.

Hibben paced the Tiger offense with a 3-for-3 game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Firminhac, Long and Short added two hits each.

In game two, seventh-inning rally came up a run short in the team’s sixth one-run loss of the season.

A defensive error led to Sheridan plating the first run of the game, but Torrington answered with a run of its own in the home half of the inning.

Greiman walked with out outs. Hibben and Shields tallied back-to-back singles to tie the game.

In the second, Kramer kept the Tiger offense going with a single, and two batters later, Desmond gave Torrington a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless third, Sheridan regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth, but Torrington quickly tied the game courtesy of a double by Hackbarth, a single by Long and an RBI ground out by Kramer.

Each team scored a run in the fifth, taking a tied game into the seventh inning.

The Jets got two across in the top half of the seventh, taking a 6-4 lead into the final half inning of play.

Hibben got things rolling with a one-out double. Shields backed it up with a single. Hackbarth grounded out, driving in Hibben. The next Tiger batter, Sheridan was able to induce a pop out for the final play of the game.

Hibben went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while Shields and Hackbarth had two hits each.

Long was tagged with the loss, pitching three innings in relief duty. He struck out three.

The Tigers are now 26-12 overall and 6-4 in the ‘A’ East Conference. They wrap up the regular season on Friday at home against the Douglas Cats (28-12 and 9-1). First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m.
