GERING – Cross-country runners from Goshen County excelled at the Gering Invite on Friday, September 6, with two athletes competing for the Torrington High School team breaking into the top five.
The event featured middle school and high school runners on courses ranging from 3-kilometers to the varsity 5K races at the Five Rocks Amphitheater in Gering.
Southeast High School junior Kaycee Kosmicki captured gold in the girls’ varsity division, clocking the 5-kilometer course in at 21 minutes, 22.02 seconds. Kosmicki crossed the finish line with more than 20 seconds to spare over the competition. Dakota Horstman of Hemingford came in second at 21:42.47.
Timing the boys’ varsity course in at 17:28.69, Lingle-Fort Laramie High School junior Sullivan Wilson clinched bronze in the event. Wilson’s time at Gering was a new season personal record.
“Kaycee Kosmicki ran an outstanding race at Gering, securing first place with a smart and tough performance,” coach Kelsey Grant said. “She executed her strategy perfectly, making a decisive move with about 1.5 miles left, pulling ahead of the pack and never looking back. On the boys’ side, Sully Wilson led our team with a strong third-place finish.”
Freshman Cole Tregemba competed in boys’ varsity and took 14th place with a time of 19:24.00.
In girls’ junior varsity, freshman Catherine Hendricks placed 18th, timing in at 31:48.25, while fellow freshman Camila Harrison finished 31st at 44:06.93.
Senior Ty Haeffelin placed 27th in boys’ junior varsity, clocking in at 24:42.86. Junior Brody Harrison took 57th place at 29:51.48.
“Despite the heat, all our athletes showed grit and we saw several personal bests,” Grant added. “I’m proud of how they competed and it’s clear that some of their summer mileage is paying off.”
