TORRINGTON – On Tuesday, October 22 at approximately 4:23 p.m. a traffic accident involving a Goshen County school bus was reported in Torrington when a vehicle ran a stop sign at the intersection of 20th Avenue and East F Street.
“We responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a school bus at the intersection of East F Street and East 20th Avenue at approximately 4:23 p.m. yesterday (October 22),” Torrington Chief Police Matt Johnson explained. “The bus was transporting children and our officers worked with the school district staff to check for injuries.”
The Goshen County School District issued a statement at 6:46 p.m., Tuesday evening.
“This afternoon (October 22), at approximately 4:15 p.m. a Goshen County school bus was involved in a minor accident in Torrington when another vehicle ran a stop sign and made contact with the front end of the bus, causing a bent front bumper,” the district explained.
“Two children were transported by ambulance and private vehicle with, thankfully, only minor injuries,” Johnson explained.
The district’s announcement also indicated minor injuries were reported as a result of the accident.
“There were students on board at the time, and a few minor injuries occurred; all students were safe. District staff contacted parents as quickly as possible and ensured they were connected with their children,” the district said. “Local law enforcement and emergency personnel responded to the scene.”
Torrington Police Department investigated the collision.
“The investigation revealed that a white SUV was traveling north on East F Street, approaching East 20th Avenue, with a stop sign. The SUV failed to yield at the stop sign, proceeded into the intersection and struck the school bus which was traveling west on East 20th Avenue,” Johnson explained. “The right corner of the SUV collided with the left front corner of the school bus. Both vehicles sustained minor damages.”
As a result of the investigation, the driver of the SUV, a 21-year-old resident of Torrington, received a citation, according to the department.
“We want to extend our gratitude to the emergency personnel who responded swiftly and helped ensure the safety of our children,” the district concluded.
