SAN BERNADINO, CALIFORNIA – The 2024 summer season concluded for the Wyoming all-stars team at the Little League World Series – Mountain Region Tournament in San Bernadino on August 5 following a loss to Nevada in the elimination bracket.
While the season wrapped up early at the tournament, the Torrington Little Leaguers represented both Goshen County and the state of Wyoming with class, sportsmanship and grit at the world series.
The Torrington majors all-stars team also deserve to be proud of an impressive postseason run. Torrington swept the competition at the Douglas Tournament in early July, posting an undefeated 4-0 record to snag the tournament title.
Torrington went on to tally an undefeated 3-0 record at the Wyoming District No. 2 championships in Laramie to earn the regional title on July 20.
The all-stars advanced through the bracket at the Wyoming state championships in Douglas with three more victories, including a 7-4 win against Rock Springs on July 27 to capture the state title for a second consecutive year.
World Series game one – Utah
The action at the mountain region tournament opened with Wyoming squaring off against Utah on Sunday, August 3.
Utah took the lead early with seven runs in the top of the first inning.
Wyoming responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Patrick Mortimore and Chase Moeller scored the first two runs for Wyoming on an error. Owen Shimic hit a grounder and advanced to second base on an error, driving in Case Gonzalez and Caden Ryall.
Utah outscored Wyoming, 2-0, in the second inning to edge up, 9-4.
Digging deep, Wyoming’s fielders closed ranks to shut out Utah in the top of the third inning. Utah popped the ball to Moeller at first base. Mortimore fielded a fly ball at center field while Preston Stratton caught a fly ball in right field.
Utah ultimately remained ahead to clinch the win, 19-5, with three runs in the top of the fourth inning and seven in the fifth.
Wyoming collected four hits against Utah with Mortimore, Hudson Hoffman, Owen Shimic and Parker Shimic each posting one hit.
Mortimore opened on the mound for Wyoming, striking out one. Ryall, Owen Curry, Stratton and Patrick Shimic played relief.
Game two – Nevada
A neck-and-neck first inning between Wyoming and Nevada on Monday ended in a 3-3 deadlock.
In the bottom of the first inning, Ryall singled to drive in Mortimore and Moeller. Gonzalez stole home to score Wyoming’s third run.
Wyoming’s fielders held Nevada to only one run in the top of the second and third innings. Nevada sealed a 24-4 win with six runs in the top of the fourth and 11 in the sixth.
Overall, Wyoming tallied eight hits against Nevada. Mortimore, Moeller and Ryall set the pace with two hits apiece while Gonzalez and Owen Shimic both contributed one hit.
Curry opened as pitcher for Wyoming, striking out two. Stratton and Parker Shimic played relief.
