Larry Grimes

April 19, 1952 – December 16, 2022

TORRINGTON – Larry Grimes, 70, born in Hays, Kansas on April 19, 1952, passed away in his sleep at his home in Torrington on Friday, Dec. 16.

He is survived by his loving wife, Haydee (Olivares) Grimes, his three daughters, Haley (Fabian) Bustamante of Torrington, Laura (David) Fronk of Rotterdam, New York, and Jasmin Grimes of the home, stepson, Hynio Munoz of Torrington, his brother, Gary (Victoria) Grimes of Topeka, Kansas, mother-in-law, Olga Olivares and grandchildren, Emily, Emanuel, Elias, Ezequiel, Evan, Eva and Skyler, and many extended nieces, nephews and family.

Larry graduated from Manhattan High School, Kansas in 1970. He continued his education at Barton County Community College and Kansas State University, where he was a member of the track team. Following college, Larry served in the United States Army at Fort Riley and then worked for KN Energy for many years before starting his own HVAV company.

Larry met his loving wife of 30 years, Haydee, and they married on Aug. 7, 1993. Together, they owned and operated Grandpa Chuy’s Restaurant on Main Street for 17 years. Larry was a gregarious presence at the restaurant, greeting customers while wearing his purple K-State shirts. He was often greeted as “coach” by the many residents he coached from Babe Ruth baseball for many years. Continuing his lifelong passion for construction projects, Larry personally completed many projects at the restaurant, his home, and built many more projects in his mind, never thinking a project was “finished.”

Larry was a life-long Kansas State fan and excited to see them beat TCU in the Big 12 Championship.

Services will be private with family and close friends. His family thanks everyone for the love and affection they have shown.
