STERLING, COLORADO – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lancers rounded out 2024 with a decisive 108-97 victory against North Platte Community College at an away game in Sterling, Colorado, on December 14.
Hitting the ground running, the Lancers established a 34-11 lead against North Platte in the first six minutes of regulation. EWC remained ahead by 20 points, 60-40, at halftime.
North Platte responded in the second half to match the Lancers in scoring and move into the lead. A back-and-forth battle ensued before an 11-1 run by the Lancers returned the momentum to EWC.
In the final minutes of regulation, EWC went 9-for-10 from the charity stripe to seal the victory.
Freshman Alain Nziza set the pace for the Lancer offense against North Platte with 37 points. Nziza shot 6-10 from inside the perimeter, 11-12 on the free-throw line and 4-7 from the outside.
EWC played Otero College in Sterling, Colorado, on December 13 with the Lancers coming up short in a physical, point-for-point fight, 64-61.
“The Lancers played well over the weekend,” coach Bill Engel said. “We eventually lost to Otero on Friday night in a tough defensive battle. The Lancers put the pieces together and beat North Platte on Saturday. From a program standpoint we are growing. Our guys are engaged and working to get better each day. The defense is scrappy and the offense is improving. We just need to stay the course.”
Individual and team stats were not available from either game at press time.
The Lancers return to action following the winter holiday with a home game against Northeastern Junior College on January 8 at 7:30 p.m.
