Lancers drop games in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lancers basketball team boarded the bus for two away games hosted by Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) on Thursday and Friday, November 14-15.

The action opened with EWC playing SLCC at the Bruin Arena on Thursday where the Lancers came up short to the Bruins, 96-62.

Saturday’s game pitted EWC against the Yavapai College Roughriders from Arizona. The Lancers controlled the scoreboard for most the game before Yavapai College tied the game, 44-44, with six minutes remaining in regulation.

A back-and-forth battle commenced and the game deadlocked, 59-59, with eight seconds to go. Yavapai netted a jumper at two seconds to secure the win, 61-59.

SLCC

The first half between the Lancers and the Bruins ended with SLCC ahead, 46-32. Salt Lake outscored EWC in the second half, 50-30.

Thirteen Lancers contributed to the final points spread for EWC against SLCC. Freshman Russell Moorer set the pace offensively with 12 points. Sophomore Bilal Cisse also netted double digits with 10 points.

Freshman LaThario Miller contributed seven points, sophomore Rodrigo Sanchez six and freshman Eli Igiranez five. Freshmen Javier Gonzalez, Jaironn Speights and Alain Nziza each tallied four points. Freshman Vukasin Spasojevic netted three points with two apiece by freshman Jumarion Weh, freshman Jouk Mayan, and sophomore Khayree Rashed. Freshman Nathan Mirich rounded out the tally with a free throw.

Cisse led on the boards with nine rebounds.

Weh, Rashed, Nziza and Moorer each shared the ball with one assists. Nziza grabbed two steals.

Yavapai College

The Lancers won a point-for-point first half against the Roughriders by two possessions, 27-22.

EWC remained ahead by one or two possessions for the first 14 minutes of the second half.

At 6:03, Yavapai College matched the Lancers in scoring, 44-44.

Weh responded with a layup and EWC pulled ahead, 46-44.

The Roughriders tied the game again at 46. Two inside shots by Gonzalez and a jumper from Miller returned the advantage to EWC, 52-48.

The game reached another stalemate at 53. Weh went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe and EWC led, 55-53, with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

A 3-pointer by the Roughriders placed Yavapai College up, 56-55, at 1:07.

Two free throws by Spasojevic tied the game, 59-59, with eight seconds remaining in regulation.

Yavapai gained possession and scored an inside shot at two seconds to  win.

Three Lancers scored double digits against Yavapai College, led by Mayan and Nziza with 11 points apiece. Miller tossed in 10 points for the Lancers.

Weh and Spasojevic each tallied six points, Sanchez four, Igiranez three with two apiece by Rashed, Gonzalez, Speights and Mirich.

Mayan led on rebounds with four. Gonzalez delivered five assists and recorded five steals.
