Lancers 1-1 on weekend

TORRINGTON – An action-packed weekend for the Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lancers featured back-to-back home games against conference rivals Central Wyoming College (CWC) and Northwest College.

On Saturday, the Lancers defeated CWC by a 21-point margin, 75-54.

“Overall, we played well (against CWC) – especially on the defensive end,” coach Bill Engel said.

The game between EWC and Northwest came down to the wire. The Lancers controlled the scoreboard for a majority of the game before Northwest edged up by several possessions late in the second half to post the win, 73-68.

“Friday’s effort carried over to a solid performance against Northwest as the Lancers held a two-point lead until the last two minutes of the game,” Engel added. “Holding Northwest to 27 percent from the arc was outstanding but ultimately the Trappers got to the free-throw line too often which ended up being the difference in the game.”

CWC

A point-for-point battle in the first half ended with the Lancers ahead by two possessions, 37-31.

EWC stepped up the intensity in the second half to top CWC in scoring, 38-23.

Three Lancers posted double-digit scoring against CWC, led by freshmen Alain Nziza with 16, Eli Igiranez 11 and Jumarion Weh 10.

Freshmen Jouk Mayan and Javier Gonzalez both contributed eight points with seven from fellow freshman Russell Moorer. Sophomore Khayree Rashed and freshmen Jaironn Speights and Vukasin Spasojevic tallied four points apiece with three from freshman LaThario Miller.

EWC shot at 55.6 percent from inside the perimeter and 43.8 percent from the outside, compared to 45.7 percent and 20 percent, respectively, by CWC.

On the boards, EWC outrebounded CWC, 19-18. Mayan led the Lancers with six rebounds.

The Lancers shared the ball well with 16 assists, led by Moorer at five.

Nziza grabbed six steals while Weh, Mayan, Sapsojevic and freshman Chris Pitts each made one block.

Northwest

The Lancers won the first half by two possessions, 35-31. EWC maintained the lead by a possession through most of the second half before Northwest pulled ahead, primarily from the free-throw line, in the final minutes of regulation.

Moorer led EWC in scoring against Northwest College with 14 points. Nziza, Weh and Spasojevic each netted 11 points.

Gonzalez contributed nine points, Igiranez six, Mayan four and Rashed two.

Spasojevic led on the boards with seven rebounds. Gonazalez tallied six assists and Moorer four steals.
