Lancer golfers win home tourney, posting a new team record

TORRINGTON – An exceptional weekend for the Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lancers culminated with the golf team winning the two-day home tournament at Torrington’s Cottonwood Country Club on April 12-13.

The Lancers advanced to the top spot on the leaderboard with a two-day total of 555 strokes, shooting consistently at 280 on Friday and 275 on Saturday.

EWC’s cumulative score came in at 21-under-par, a new record for the Lancers.

Freshman Tytan Birchell captured first place on the leaderboard after two days of competition at 137 strokes. Birchell improved from 71 on Friday to 66 on Saturday to shoot seven-under-par.

“I’m so proud of the way the guys played both days,” coach Zach Smith said. “They keep getting better and better and you never know who is going to step up each day. Last fall, we set a team record at 16 under par, tied it last week, and this week they shattered it by shooting 21 under par. We have so many guys playing great golf.”

Freshmen Taiki Sugawara and Joshua Chapman tied for second place at 139 (five under par). Sugawara shot 68 in the first round and 71 in the second. Chapman completed the first day at 72 and moved up to 67 on Saturday.

Sophomore Leander Suttka garnered fourth place at 142 (-2), shooting 69 on Friday and 73 on Saturday.

Freshman Braylon Bingham tied for fifth place at 143 (72-71, -1). Fellow freshman Jax Oviatt tied for eighth at 144 (68-76, on par) with freshman Jordan Hunt tying for 10th place at 145 (73-72, +1).
