SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – The Eastern Wyoming College women’s basketball team is still looking for its first win of the season after going 0-4 last week.
The busy stretch began on Tuesday with an 82-55 loss to Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff.
The Lady Lancers got off to a fast start, scoring the first six points of the game and 10 of the first 11 points.
The 10-1 lead through the first three and a half minutes evaporated quickly.
Western Nebraska held EWC to only two more points the remainder of the first quarter, but the Lady Lancers held a 12-11 lead after 10 minutes.
Only seconds into the second quarter, a four-point play by WNCC gave them the first lead of the game at 15-12.
The four-point play came in the midst of a 14-2 Lady Cougar run.
Freshman Tamar Kopilevich’s bucket with 8:36 left before halftime, slowed the home team’s run.
The teams traded lead six more times in the second quarter.
The final lead change came with three minutes left before halftime.
Down 33-29 at halftime, Eastern Wyoming was outscored 50-26 in the second half as the Lady Cougars pulled away for the 27-point victory.
Ines Gnahore led the Lady Lancers with a double-double. She tallied 11 points and 18 rebounds. Freshman Darija Erakovic added six points.
Over the weekend, EWC traveled to Taylorsville, Utah for the Salt Lake Community College Thanksgiving Classic.
On Thursday, the Lady Lancers opened the weekend with a 99-38 loss to Odessa (Texas) College.
EWC trailed 19-10 after one quarter, but over the final three quarters, Odessa outscored the Lady Lancers 80-28.
EWC was held to 12 points in the second and third quarters and only four points in the fourth.
Gnahore led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Neylan Vila Delicado added nine points. No one else had more than three points.
The other two games were a much different story for Eastern Wyoming, dropping the two games by a combined 11 points.
On Friday, EWC’s comeback attempt came up short 72-66 against Utah State Eastern.
The Lady Lancers led 20-16 after one quarter, but USE outscored EWC 21-8 in the second quarter, pushing its lead to 59-46 heading into the third quarter.
Over the final 10 minutes, EWC outscored Utah State Eastern 20-13 to cut into the deficit.
The Lady Lancers cut the deficit to six at 69-63 following a layup by Delicado. It proved to be as close as EWC came to seeing the lead the remainder of the game.
Gnahore dropped in a team-high 24 points, while Kopilevich added 11. Freshman Amanda Sene da Cruz tossed in 10.
In the final game of the weekend, Eastern Wyoming fell to undefeated Salt Lake Community College 59-54.
The game was close throughout the 40 minutes.
Salt Lake’s largest lead came with 6:06 left in the third quarter when the Lady Bruins took a 42-31 lead.
Over the remainder of the game, EWC chipped away at the deficit, and the Lady Lancers cut the deficit to 45-43 following a layup by Andrea Gutierrez Ciordia with eight minutes left in the game.
However, SLCC kept the visitors at bay for the remainder of the game.
Kopilevich and Gnahore led the team with 14 points each, while Delicado added 12.
The Lady Lancers are now 0-10 on the season, and they travel to North Platte Community College at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2. They also face McCook Community College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3.
