LA JUNTA, COLORADO – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) men’s and women’s golf teams traveled to La Junta for a tournament sponsored by Otero College and Lamar Community College on March 20-21.

The Lady Lancers battled their way to first place on the team leaderboard out of a field of four. EWC tallied a two-day total of 668 strokes, shooting 333 on day one and 335 in round two.

“The girls had a solid tournament,” coach Zach Smith said. “All the girls played consistently enough to pull off their fifth win of the season. I truly believe that all the girls could be our best finisher each week. That balance has helped us get off to a great first year of girls’ golf.”

The EWC men progressed to second place on the team leaderboard out of five schools with a cumulative total of 570 strokes (10 over par). The Lancers demonstrated considerable improvement from 295 strokes in the first round to 275 on day two.

“The guys didn’t play well on Thursday,” coach Smith added. “I was looking forward to seeing how they responded on day two and they didn’t disappoint. We were able to gain seven strokes back by shooting -5 as a team. At the end of the day, though, we had dug too deep of a hole to Otero. Hats off to them – they played very well at home.”

The Lancers and Lady Lancers travel to McCook, Nebraska for a tournament this weekend.

“I know we are all looking forward to playing the challenging course in McCook,” Smith said.

Freshman Georgie Lou Paterakis led the EWC women in La Junta with a fifth-place finish. Paterakis shot 79 strokes in the first round and 82 in the second for a total of 161 (+21).

Fellow freshman Jessica Applegarth finished sixth place on the leaderboard with a two-day score of 166 (+26). Applegarth collected 80 strokes on the first day and 86 on the second.

Freshmen Elliann Irick and Bailey Watson tied for seventh place at 171 strokes (+31). Irick went 84-87 while Watson improved from 90 strokes in the opening round to 81 in the second.

Freshman Shayla Clayton took 10th place at 177 (+37). Clayton progressed from 91 strokes on day one to 86 on day two.

In the men’s division, sophomore Taiki Sugawara paced the Lancers with a third-place finish. Sugawara collected 72 strokes in the first round and 69 in the second for a total of 141 (+1).

Joshua Chapman, also a sophomore, tallied 144 strokes (+4) after two days to tie for sixth place. Chapman went from 77 strokes on Thursday to 67 on Friday.

The sophomore duo of Tytan Birchall and Coltin Powell tied for eighth place overall at 146 strokes (+6). Birchall went 69-77 with Powell going 77-69.
