SCOTTSBLUFF – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers basketball team traveled across the state line for two games hosted by Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) on Friday and Saturday, November 15-16.
The Lady Lancers faced off against Dodge City Community College on Friday and fell, 94-51.
Saturday’s game featured the second showdown of the season between EWC and WNCC at the Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff. The first quarter ended with WNCC up by only one, 13-12. The Lady Cougars steadily widened their lead in the second half to post an 86-60 victory.
Dodge City
Dodge City took control of the scoreboard in the first half to lead, 46-23, at the end of the second quarter.
While the Lady Lancers matched Dodge City in scoring in the fourth quarter, 19-19, EWC came up short in overcoming a 75-32 deficit established by Dodge City at the end of the third quarter.
Sophomore Tawny Rodriguez led the Lady Lancers in scoring, netting 11 points. Freshman Lucy Devoy tallied nine points while sophomores Aliyah Tripp and Josephine Vourliotis both contributed eight points. Freshman Nikolina Vukcevic tossed in seven points with five by sophomore Leamsi Acuna and three from freshman Yaiza Paredes.
Tripp and Devoy each pulled down seven rebounds. Tripp shared the ball well with seven assists. Devoy grabbed three steals.
WNCC
A physical first quarter between EWC and WNCC ended with the Lady Cougars up, 13-12.
WNCC netted 34 points in the second quarter while holding the Lady Lancers to 18 to pull ahead, 47-30, at halftime.
The Lady Cougars continued to outscore EWC in the second half, 39-30.
Three Lady Lancers scored double digits against WNCC. Vukcevic led with 14 points while Tripp and Paredes sank 11 points apiece.
Freshman Ariadna Martinez recorded eight points, Vourliotis seven and Devoy five. Acuna and freshman Rhia Saggar rounded the scorebook out with two points each.
On the boards, Paredes and Martinez both totaled five rebounds. Paredes passed the ball for three assists and posted three steals.
The Lady Lancers compete at the Northeastern Junior College Classic in Sterling, Colorado from November 21-22. EWC plays the host school on Thursday and squares off against Concordia College on Friday.
