TORRINGTON – Despite a tenacious effort by the Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers volleyball team to overtake Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) at home on October 22, EWC ultimately came up a few points shy in turning the tide and WNCC posted a 3-0 sweep.
The Lady Cougars won the first set by 10 points, 25-15.
The Lady Lancers found their rhythm in the second set. The lead switched back and forth several times before tying at five with a kill from freshman Amarie Huntsman. WNCC took control at 6 and steadily widened its lead, 16-10.
The Lady Lancers battled back with kills by freshmen Annika Cantrell, Mina Milivojevic and Una Stepic and sophomore Siala Unufe and an ace from sophomore Boden Liljedahl.
A service error by WNCC resulted in the Lady Lancers matching the Lady Cougars in scoring at 22. WNCC edged up, 23-22. Unufe slammed over a kill and the set deadlocked, 23-23. WNCC sent the ball out of bounds returning a serve by Unufe and EWC pulled up, 24-23.
WNCC responded with two points to retake the lead, 25-24. Another service error by the Lady Cougars resulted in a tie at 25. WNCC managed to pull ahead by two to score game point, 27-25.
The Lady Lancers controlled the scoreboard for most of the third set. EWC opened the set with a three-point run, including an ace by sophomore Emma Blackstar and a kill from Unufe.
The Lady Lancers remained ahead with kills from Huntsman, Unufe and Stepic, a block by sophomore Belle Dolan and aces from Stepic and sophomore Neeley Rutledge.
WNCC responded with a four-point run to tie the set at 14. Coverage by Huntsman resulted in a point for the Lady Lancers and EWC returned to the lead, 15-14.
Milivojevic reached up for a block to widen the Lady Lancers’ advantage, 17-14. Deep digs by Rutledge, Liljedahl and Blackstar kept the ball alive and Dolan powered over a kill, placing EWC up, 18-15.
WNCC pulled ahead at 21. The set tied at 23 when WNCC sent the ball out returning a serve by Blackstar. WNCC then scored two points to point to win, 25-23.
The Lady Lancers tallied 31 kills against WNCC. Unufe set the pace for the EWC offense with nine kills. Huntsman totaled seven kills, Dolan six, Cantrell four, Stepic three and Milivojevic and Blackstar one apiece.
Blackstar aced three serves with one ace each by Liljedahl, freshman Vladana Ristic, Rutledge and Stepic.
Defensively, Dolan and Unufe both posted two blocks with Milivojevic contributing one. Liljedahl covered the floor with 20 digs.
