Lady Lancers fall to LCCC in four-set battle

TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers took on the Laramie County Community College (LCCC) Lady Eagles in a conference match that went into four sets on Tuesday, October 14.

The Lady Lancers came out strong in the first set with a 9-3 run. LCCC rallied to tie the game at 14. A back-and-forth battle for control of the scoreboard ensued before the Lady Eagles pulled up to score game point, 25-20.

LCCC went on to take the second set, 25-18.

EWC fought back in the third set to not only close an early 5-0 lead by LCCC but take control of the scoreboard to win, 25-21.

LCCC rallied to lead the fourth set. Despite a valiant last-minute effort by EWC to close the gap, LCCC ultimately took the set, 25-13, for a 3-1 conference win.

Four intense sets

EWC scored the first point in the opening set against LCCC with a kill from sophomore Una Stepic.

The Lady Lancers followed with a 9-2 run. Sophomores Adisyn Rollins and Amarie Huntsman both fired off kills while freshmen Alana Asante and Brynlee Huff reached up for blocks.

EWC maintained its lead with a pair of kills by Huff and another block from Asante.

LCCC responded to match the Lady Lancers in scoring at 14.

Sophomore Annika Cantrell slammed a kill for EWC to regain control of the scoreboard, 15-14. Stepic aced a serve and the Lady Lancers pulled up, 16-14.

LCCC tied the set again at 17 and scored a point to take the lead again, 18-17. Cantrell and Rollins defended the net with a block and the set reached a stalemate at 18.

The Lady Eagles scored and pulled up, 19-18. Asante spiked a kill for a stalemate at 19.

LCCC moved back ahead by one point, 20-19, before sending the ball out on a serve.

The Lady Eagles took control of the court at 21 and remained up through game point, 25-20.

LCCC commenced the second set with a 7-2 run. The Lady Lancers fought back to narrow the Lady Eagles’ lead to two or three several times throughout the set but LCCC remained ahead through game point, 25-18.

The third set began with a 5-0 run by LCCC before EWC regrouped to turn the tables. Sophomore Savannah Kirkbride and Huntsman both powered over a kill while Stepic and freshman Olive Osmera aced a serve.

Asante blocked an attempt by the Lady Eagles to score before serving up an ace, closing LCCC’s lead to one, 9-8.

Huff slammed a kill and freshman Jaylie Chrichfield stepped up to the service line for an ace to tie the set at 10.

LCCC retook the lead, 11-10. The Lady Eagles tangled with the net returning a dig deep in the backcourt by Osmera and the set deadlocked, 11-11.

The Lady Lancers pulled ahead for good at 12 when Cantrell spiked a kill.

Kills by Huntsman and Cantrell anchored a 4-1 run by the Lady Lancers.

Asante took EWC to 20 with a block. Huff and Stepic followed up with kills to place the Lady Lancers ahead, 22-16.

A kill by Stepic resulted in 24. Cantrell delivered a kill for game point, 25-21, after a dig by Osmera and pass from Chrichfield.

In the final set, LCCC went on an 18-3 run to post a 22-8 lead. Huntsman fired off a pair of kills and several errors by LCCC closed the deficit by five points before LCCC scored game point, 25-13.
