TORRINGTON – A successful weekend of back-to-back home games for the Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers resulted in two conference victories against Central Wyoming College (CWC) and Northwest College.
EWC opened the action with a 31-point win against Central Wyoming College, 85-54, on Friday, January 24.
Saturday’s game featured the Lady Lancers versus Northwest College with EWC triumphing, 82-68.
CWC
EWC commenced Friday’s game by outscoring CWC, 24-16, in the first quarter.
The Lady Lancers stepped up their game in an explosive second quarter that saw EWC net 21 points while a gritty Lady Lancer defense held CWC to only eight.
The halftime score favored EWC by more than 20 points, 45-24.
The third quarter proved closer as CWC attempted to turn the tide, but the Lady Lancers topped CWC in scoring by one possession, 14-12, to remain ahead, 59-36, as the final quarter began.
EWC maintained its momentum into the fourth quarter, netting 26 points while holding CWC to 18, clinching the win.
Four Lady Lancers tallied double-digit scoring against CWC. Sophomores Nikolina Vukcevic and Aliya Tripp and freshman Yaiza Paredes each collected 18 points while sophomore Boden Liljedahl tossed in 14.
Freshman Ariadna Martinez contributed nine points, sophomore Leamsi Acuna five, freshman Rhia Saggar four and sophomore Josephine Vourliotis one.
On the boards, Vukcevic pulled down nine rebounds while Martinez tallied eight.
Acuna shared the ball for six assists and Martinez grabbed three steals. Tripp rounded out the stat sheet with two blocks.
Northwest
Northwest won the first quarter against EWC, 18-14.
Battling back in the second quarter, the Lady Lancers topped Northwest in scoring, 22-17, to pull into the lead by one point, 36-35, at halftime.
EWC hit the ground running in a fast and furious third quarter that saw the Lady Lancers outmaneuver Northwest, 25-16.
EWC entered the fourth quarter with a 10-point advantage, 61-51.
The Lady Lancers remained ahead in a point-for-point fourth quarter with EWC netting an additional 21 points while holding Northwest to 17.
The final point spread once again included four EWC players with double digits, led by Vukcevic with 19 points. Tripp scored 18 points with 12 apiece by Acuna and Paredes.
Liljedahl collected nine points, Vourliotis four with two each by Martinez and Saggar.
Defensively, Acuna and Martinez both pulled down seven rebounds while Acuna, Tripp and Paredes each snatched two steals.
The Lady Lancers shared the ball well with a total of 20 assists, including four apiece from Acuna, Vukcevik, Tripp and Liljedahl.
